The Ultimate Inferior Beings opens on Tenalp, an Earth colony. jixX, a landscape architect, has been called in to report to the Tenalp Ministry of Intelligence and Spying. Presumably for some landscaping project. With a three foot dwarf alberta spruce in tow, jixX listens horrified as a computer relays a top secret mission involving space travel and gives him command of the space ship, the Night Ripple. Confused as to why he has been entrusted with such a delicate mission that has nothing to do with landscaping, jixX is sent to the Night Ripple as its captain.

Having never flown a spaceship before, jixX is hoping for a well-seasoned crew only to realize that his three man crew (a gynecologist, a carpenter, and a behavioral chemist) have never flown before either. To add to the mess, this motley group is joined by the Night Ripple's computer, LEP. Unfortunately for the crew, someone has accidentally installed two Wit Boxes giving LEP double the personality. LEP only offers unhelpful hints, terrible directions to the mess room, and a running commentary on the crew.

On the way to complete their top secret mission (the mission that nobody on the Night Ripple knows anything about since it’s so top secret), they run into a group of aliens. Maybe not the most disastrous thing that could happen, except that this particular group believe in the Ultimate Inferior Beings, a society so inferior that they must be destroyed. So far jixX’s crew are not making that good of an impression and it is now up to jixX to save human kind.

The Ultimate Inferior Beings by Mark Roman is a lighthearted book filled with British humor. From the beginning, the humor is quick, tasteful, and draws the reader in. I found myself chuckling over cheesy puns and LEP's one-liners. The characters were all well developed and loveable. From the German behavioral chemist to the Tenalp overlord, each added to the ridiculousness of the situation and made it funnier.

If I had one complaint it would be the ending. I found it a little disappointing and the wrap up fell a little flat for me.

Overall, I would rate the Ultimate Inferior Beings a 3 out of 4 stars. It was a very clever and fun read. It was engaging and had me smiling the whole way through. If you do pick this up, make sure to read the glossary--it's possibly the best part of the book.

Dear lnygaard. Thank you for the nice review. I'm glad the humour made it across the Atlantic and arrived safely as humor. Sorry about the ending. I liked it, but then I would, wouldn't I. :-)
