Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz was a good read. It had an intriguing concept of an orderly physical plane that shares space with a magical chaotic plane. The main plot is a kingdom / political drama. Within the novel, there are many players and at first, it is hard to see how they will align. There is one character, Galen, that while I can sort of guess what may come of him; he hasn't intersected with the other characters and issues. I believe this is the first of the series as there are a lot of plot threads that do not have a conclusion by the end so I can see more to come.
This book was very well edited overall and I had no problem reading it. I enjoyed the description of how the magical plane, Caromentis, worked. The world-building of the kingdom of Voulhire was good as well; while it was purported to be a magical, golden age kingdom, the book did show not every region was treated equally, the kingdom had its issues and bad actors. One of them, Lord Meldorath, on the surface looks like a bad guy; but there were glimpses that maybe that isn't entirely the case -that maybe he is an end justifies the means kind of person, so I am hoping in the next book we will get more clarity there. The Riva who are the antagonists in the kingdom seem very psychotic and murderous, but their reasons are not clear.
There isn't much negative in the book except for not having some clarity on the motivations of several of the characters. Given this is a series, I do think this is on purpose so you are left questioning and waiting for the next in the series to get some answers. There is a bit of death in this book, you start liking a person and then they get dispatched. There is also a lot of unique words created for this world for types of magic, religion, and various others which can be difficult to define via context clues. There was a dictionary in the back so that helped quite a bit.
I would give this book a 4 out of 4 stars. It was very intriguing and there are a lot of craftily interwoven stories that remind you of other epic novel series, like the Sword of Truth and Game of Thrones series. I do think it has the potential to be a really fun series to read and I look forward to seeing where the author takes us.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes reading about magical kingdoms with political drama.
