Lately, I was beginning to despair with the books coming my way. Mostly, they were not my type - I blame myself on not picking up the titles more carefully. So I was more than just reluctant to choose The Timeless Tome by J. R. Christopher. The blurb was intriguing, and it looked exactly like the kind of book I would have picked in my early days as a reader - all of it was too good to be true.

Thus, I started reading it, all set to be yet again disappointed - and I was delightfully proven wrong!

Draida is a young thief who can also use magic, albeit in secret, as the man who acts as his father, Raskas, has requested. With him fighting to stay alive day after day, not from some cruel enemy, but from hunger, Draida has no room for thought over matters like political issues and power struggles. However, when Raskas's work for one of the most feared group, the so-called Pipers, puts him and a girl living with them, Sylvia, in great danger, Draida knows he must man up and get involved in all those things he had considered trivial up until now. And with a spellbook wanted and feared by many choosing him as its next vessel, causing the most dangerous being in the whole world to go after him, the young fellow will need more than magic to get out of this alive and, most importantly, not alone...

As I said earlier, the plot is fascinating. Good ol' fantasy, with a young hero that has no pure background, and yet tries to stay true to some morals of his own. While most characters in the book found Draida's actions to be against their personal ethics, the boy did his best to stand up to the occasion, when others who had been raised right would have already ran away or taken the coward's way out and surrendered. As for the pace, it started real slow, and boy did it take forever to finally get to the good stuff, but don't all roller coasters do that? The slow build-up, and then the quick dives and turns?

Because that's what this book was. A roller coaster. One with a particularly intricate design, seeing as the reader has to reach a certain point of the story before the shocks begin. Up to a specific page, the "ride" is simple, although a bit confusing, but then Mr. Christopher pulls the lever, and BANG! You get the first plot twist, you gasp, and you think "Oh, God, this is NOT happening!". Just when you think you're calm enough to keep going, he does it again. And again. I think I counted about four or so times in only two chapters that I had to stop, take a deep breath, and scream to get all the tension to leave my head - yes, the twists were making me dizzy!

The ony problem in all this was that it needed some proofreading - grammar mistakes often had me reading the same passage again and again to understand what it was I was reading. Other than that, it was a wonderful and enjoyable read, so I think I will only take one star from its rating.

I rate this book 3 out of 4 stars. Delightful, with only the minor details keeping it back. I simply loved Draida's journey, and I'm sure others will come to love it, too.

This book sounds like a very interesting and intriguing read. I especially like the part about all the twists and turns while tension is building. I plan to definitely add this book to my reading list. It doesn't sound like the few errors in writing would detract from what sounds like a good story.
