Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first volume in a new fantasy series beautifully written by Matthew Tysz. The story mainly follows Galen Bray: a humble young man rescued from his war-torn home and taken to Voulhire. This nation is at the peak of its Golden Age and the leaders want to keep improving. When Galen arrives in the little town of Magnum Caelum, he is given a new vocation by his recently deceased uncle. In other areas of Voulhire, court intrigue and invasion keep King Wilhelm Arcolo distracted while his supposed enemy escapes from imprisonment. Lord Dalehai Meldorath is a strange character, one who is not easy to place into one box or the other when it comes to his apparent guilt. After the brutal murder of almost an entire fishing village we see the story end in darkness and despair, leaving many questions waiting for answers in the following novel.
This novel caught my eye because of the style in which it was written. I have read a few books like this, written in a style made for TV. It reads much like a period novel dusted with a sprinkle of modern concepts and conventions, which creates a very unique and captivating environment to play in. I quite enjoyed how each chapter heading gives you a clear indication of where the scene has moved to, which helps when there are so many characters involved to create this saga. I noticed that only the main character is written in the first person view, while the rest of the story follows the more conventional story-telling structures. The fighting scenes are kept simple but exciting and Tysz’s morbid humor had me in stitches!
On a slightly critical note, I felt that Meldorath had very little ‘screen’ time until the very end of the book. It could be that the author is keeping him in the wings waiting for future novels, or that Meldorath simply isn’t absolutely necessary until later in the series. I also felt that the mix of very modern language like "metrosexual", and the Old World culture was a little disparate at first but it develops into something worth reading.
This novel is exceptionally well-written and contains a very detailed and convoluted world to delve into. The characters and relationships develop nicely as the book progresses. It is due to these reasons that I gave this book 4 out of 4 stars.
The audience for this book could be considered very open: ranging from young teens, magic lovers to the elderly. Providing you enjoy battles, magic and secrets; you will love this book.
