Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service- Subject to Change Without Notice, by Craig W. Stanfill, is a futuristic AI novel. Artificial Intelligence controls and supervises every aspect of peoples lives. This novel follows Kim, a rising star at the Artificial Intelligence Company, whose job is to train and manage AI’s. Following the rules and reporting others who don’t will get you rewarded with improvements in your social standing. After some misadventure Kim’s life of structure spirals out of control leading her to discover things that may threaten to tear down the society’s corrupt powers and disrupt life as she knows it.
This novel was an amazing read. Firstly, I will start with the font and paragraph layout/break up of the text. This was superbly done, the font is an easy-to-read size, the text is broken up in a way that makes it easy for the reader to pick up where they left off. I liked the font type it was easy on the eyes and the page was never overwhelmed with words. The language choice throughout the novel was consistent, I enjoyed the play on words to reference things we all know with a bit of a fun change up. The construction of this book was so cleverly laid out. At no point did I feel I was overwhelmed with information. The explanation of topics in the book was beautifully executed and very easy to understand. I liked that whilst there were a variety of characters the main focus was always on the main character. I enjoyed how the author used the other characters to let the reader explore the main character and also easily present information about the world in this novel. Whilst this is a futuristic book, it a no point left the reader confused with new concepts. The descriptions were done in a simple but vivid way that made things easy to conjure up. I actually would love if the next instalments had some illustrations as I feel readers want to know how the author sees his characters. Additionally, I loved the way this novel made me connect to the AI characters, I hope to see the housebot in future books.
There is not a lot I can find fault with this novel about. One thing I disliked was that towards the end of the novel the paragraphs were less broken up. However, it makes sense that it was done as such and the breaks, when done, made it flow. But as I mentioned above, I really loved how majority of the novel was constructed as it made it very easy to read.
I would rate this novel 4 out of 4 stars. The only editing issue I noticed was on page 103, “it was difficult to judge its size, but it looked oddly out of place”. On the document there appears to be a weird space between the t and the o, however I do not wish to reduce its rating for something that may only be an issue as a result of the format of the download.
I feel this novel could appeal to a variety of readers, from fantasy to artificial intelligence lovers. I would not recommend this novel for people who are strongly religious as there are elements of same sex interactions, sex and drug use are also prevalent throughout. As a result of the previously mentioned things, I would recommend this for a slight older reader (18+).
