We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is the first installment in a series of fantasy fiction novels penned by the talented author, Matthew Tysz. The events in this book lay the groundwork for the entire series by introducing us to some of the characters that are central to the saga of the Kingdom of Voulhire. The reader is immediately captured by the story of Galen, a young man who immigrates to Voulhire from his war-torn home in the Lands of the Princes. In Voulhire, Galen begins to build a new life after inheriting a metal forging business from his late great-uncle. He becomes friends with the dubious Rowan, who takes it upon himself to teach Galen the ways of Voulhire.

Matthew Tysz introduces us to the world of magic and fantasy that is Voulhire. The mysterious Lord Meldorath, whose name arouses fear and trepidation in all who hear it, is introduced as a mage of note. A huge part of the book centers around the ill-fated town of Hillport where Lord Meldorath is held prisoner by the king of Voulhire. It appears that the destinies of Hillport and that of Lord Meldorath are intertwined. Secrecy, intrigue and betrayal are rife in Soulhire, the capital of Voulhire, where we also meet King Wilhelm and the high society of Voulhire.

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies was a greatly enjoyable read. The storyline was unique and imaginative, with the author introducing the reader to the interesting notion of Caromentis, a universe of magic. I appreciated the fact that, in this way, the author presents the reader with a unique take on the world of magic. I also found the character-building to be superb, with each character drawing you into their story and how it fits into the bigger picture.

The book seems slow-paced at the beginning, as the author patiently and carefully lays the groundwork for the storyline. This being the first in a series of books, We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies appears to end abruptly. One is left desperately curious to know what becomes of this great kingdom of Voulhire. If this first book is anything to go by, then I certainly cannot wait to read the next book in the series.

The minor dislike I had was the fact that now and then, the book contains descriptions of graphic and unrestrained violence, which I suppose, though relevant to the plot, was a bit disconcerting for me.

The book is well-edited; hardly any errors were noted. I have given this book a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies would be a good fit for anyone who enjoys fantasy fiction. Sensitive readers may be put off by the descriptions of the sometimes-violent conflicts in the book.
