Review of The Scrolls of the Bonefairy Castle
The Scrolls of the Bonefairy Castle by David Spiegel is a work of fantasy. After trying to present his family’s story for a school project, Hunter realizes he knows little about their history. He begins to visit his grandparents to learn about their family’s past. Through his grandpa’s stories, he learns about his namesake, Sir Hunter, who used to serve the royalty of Bonefairy Castle. With tales of fantastical creatures and his ancestor’s exploits in his mind, Hunter decides to find Bonefairy Castle after he graduates high school. During his explorations, he finds a scroll written by the very queen his ancestor used to serve and begins to learn that there’s more to Bonefairy Castle than meets the eye.
The concept of this work was interesting. I enjoyed Hunter learning about his family’s history from his grandfather and that the chapters alternated between Hunter’s point of view and Sir Hunter’s story. However, Hunter’s chapters that followed any of his grandpa’s stories were essentially him and his grandpa going over everything from the previous chapter again. This became extremely repetitive without adding further details and drastically slowed down the plot.
Unfortunately, there were many things that led me to believe that this work has not been professionally edited. There were many errors and typos throughout the entire book. Much of the wording was awkward. There were also unintentional tense changes throughout the work as well as a few instances where the first person was used in a chapter that was written in the third person. The writing style was simplistic and repetitive, which made it difficult to find the story engaging.
The dialogue was stilted and awkward throughout the book. When Hunter was young, he spoke in a formal and stilted way. Sir Hunter, who was alive during medieval times, spoke more informally than Hunter did. Sir Hunter also had paragraphs of dialogue where he was overexplaining things in a repetitive manner, which didn’t feel realistic or engaging.
Sir Hunter was also supposed to be a brave, honorable, and noble man. But he treated his girlfriend poorly and no one thought there was anything wrong with this. For example, he came to visit her after being gone for a long time and demanded food from her. She didn’t have any ready, so he left to drink with friends. He came back only after he was drunk, and she had to take care of him and get him ready for bed. But she was simply happy to have him there. It’s unfortunate to present this as the behavior of a noble and honorable man.
I’m rating The Scrolls of the Bonefairy Castle by David Spiegel 1 out of 4 stars. I don’t think the work was professionally edited, the characters and plot were not engaging, and the work was difficult to enjoy. Readers of fantasy may enjoy this work and it would be suitable for young adult readers.
