Review of New Hope
A long time ago, the Protagonists were massacred on their native planet Aurora by a species called Sarassains. Some of the Protagonists that survived the holocaust arrived on Earth in search of a potentially intelligent race that could help them in the great conflict threatening their existence. They set up several hidden bases on the planet, waiting for the right time to establish contact. Meanwhile, the Sarassains are on a mission to find and annihilate all remaining Protagonists and other species in the galaxy.
Today, Ellie is one of the astronauts that crash on the moon’s surface. The astronauts are taken to an Earth installation on the moon, where several dormant alien artifacts are studied. These artifacts become activated only when Ellie is present. Ellie soon finds herself face to face with an alien holograph called Elrael. He claims to be an affiliate of the Protagonists and directs Ellie to the Protagonists' installation on Earth, supposedly in preparation for the war against the Sarassians. Is Elrael who he says he is? Are humans intelligent enough to defend themselves against what is to come? Who are the Protagonists, and what led to their massacre? Find answers to the questions and more in New Hope by Matt Fatek.
One thing I like about this novel is the plot progression. The way the author arranges the sequence of events ensures that readers would follow the story without any confusion. Also, I like that the book is narrated from the third-person perspective, and the characters engage in constant dialogue between themselves. As a result, I was able to understand the personality of each character a bit better and also have a bird’s-eye view of the happenings throughout the tale. It was interesting that the author provided readers insights into the thoughts of several characters in several scenes. That also added to the character development, which was excellent.
I like how the author incorporates little details that make the tale a bit more real. For example, it was impressive to see how the author took note of the difference in the gravitational pull between the moon and Earth; when he wrote that Ellie jumped a higher distance on the moon than on Earth, I completely understood how that was possible. My favorite scene came towards the end of the tale when the Sarassians were gathered in a meeting. I won’t disclose why that is my favorite part of the book to limit spoilers, but what I can say is that it sets the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating second book.
The only thing I can fault about this novel is its editing. I found over ten errors throughout the text, which tells me that the book is not professionally edited. Apart from the errors I noticed, there’s nothing to dislike about this edition. I rate the book 3 out of 4 stars and recommend it to people that are interested in intergalactic fiction stories. Readers should note that there are lots of major profane words scattered throughout the text, and the book may not be suitable for people that can’t look past them. Happy reading!
