Veetch: a Shoshone shaman, a '58 Edsel, a UFO, and a Magical Key Save America's Bacon by Mike Fry is a paranormal science-fiction novel which follows the life of unique characters within a town which is shrouded in mystery. The life of the protagonist is centripetal of the plot. The main character is an albino who has certain powers and sets out to fulfill a curiosity he has while carrying out the tasks set by other entities. The main character, Veetch, is helped by friends and fellow townspeople to accomplish the tasks.

The story begins with the introduction of the protagonist, Veetch, and the description of his childhood, the nightmares he faced while growing up, the abilities he has, and his feelings about love and the woman he likes. He is an official in the town, and he is asked to help in a situation on the border of the town, which he does with his assistant and other townfolks. After solving the issue, they are introduced to the man they helped, who gives his reason for entering their town. The story then follows the journey Veetch and the man embarks on to fulfill the tasks they were told to do by other entities.

The book has some positive aspects. The first of which is that the book highlights some of the problems which catholic orphanages have in dealing with somewhat distinct children. This can be seen through the main character, which highlights some of the problems he went through at the hands of those overseeing the orphanage due to his albinism and how other children in the orphanage maltreated him. Another positive that the book has is showcasing the theme of greed. The book showed how greed could make people betray their acquaintances for money. Also, it shows how greed causes the exploitation of the earth and pollutes it. This is seen through the actions of Pennyman, who wanted the element and mineral to be mined from their town although most of the townspeople were against it. A further positive in the novel was highlighting some of the problems which native Americans have, such as pollution and illness got from such pollution. The religion and culture of some of the natives were also displayed in the novel, as can be seen through Martin, the medicine man. The book showcased a lot of diversity of cultures and religions. It showed the different practices that are out there in the world and how they coexist. The theme of the destruction of the planet through pollution was also heavily discussed in the novel, and the need to solve such an issue.

The book also had its negatives. The book was confusing as there were a lot of components to the novel, some of which conflicted with one another. The author seemed to try and organize them, but it did not just work. An example is the combination of aliens and deities in the book. While the combination of the two components is not bad, the novel's combination was not well done as enough details were not put into it. Although mentioning impracticality seems counterproductive, the impracticality of the town they live in is also another negative. While the town is protected by other beings and deities, the fact that it had a church, electricity, and other amenities which are accessed by the government while also being unknown to most of the outside world did not make sense. While the explanation of some of the occurrences was given in the latter part of the book, the confusion in between seemed to drag. It appeared like it was built for suspense but instead made it strenuous to read it. Some of the explanation that was given in the novel lacked quality as they just seemed like they were there just to have a justification for the action rather than having a rationale for what was going on.

I give the book a rating of two out of four stars. The book had so many positives, as I have already mentioned but it was confusing and seemed to lack a definite purpose for the protagonist going through what he did. I would have appreciated this book better if the protagonist had a purpose.

I recommend this book to native Americans as the book talks about their culture and some of the hardships that they go through. I also recommend the book to individuals who are into books with cultural diversity. Anyone who wants to learn more about other people's cultures would enjoy this one.

The book will be more interesting if the author tries to make it more organized. Thanks for the great review.

This novel seems to have some interesting elements but mixing science fiction and religion is tricky, so the author needs to think it through very well. Thank you for your honest review!
