Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Galen is probably either the luckiest man on earth or the unluckiest man in the universe. His blessing of a new life, free of the memories and smell of death, may just as well be a curse. After being saved by Rowan from certain death, he is thrown into a new but dangerous adventure by life itself. The mysteries surrounding the rumored darkness that hovers over Voulhire must be solved. Although Galen did not set out from his home with the thought of solving those mysteries in mind, it seemed that fate had other plans for him. His new life in Voulhire depends on it. Despite being a lowly blacksmith, the discovery of magic in the form of iron sets the ball rolling. How will he respond to fate’s call?
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a book about dying and surviving in an unlikely world. Voulhire is a world where magic coexists with religion, sheer will, and unfathomable strength. This book is the first in the We Are Voulhire series. It serves as the book that introduces us to Galen, his friends, and his enemies (both known and unknown). Matthew Tysz, the brilliant author who wrote it, used it to show me what to expect in future books. He showed me Voulhire and its people. He showed me the wickedness of man and the kindness of a few. It is funny that this world is very much like our own (except for the magic), and I liked that.
The quality of the story and writing in We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is high. Even though I cannot say that the author wrote this book solely to teach us morals in life, I can say it was an interesting read. I liked how the story flowed, without a hitch, from one scene to another. It did not matter that some scenes had nothing to do with many others in the book. The transition was just beautiful. The book was exceptionally well-edited.
I loved the way Matthew Tysz wrote each scene and chapter. This feature was what I liked the most in the book. I discovered a new writing style that I had no idea I needed. Matthew Tysz wrote the story first from Galen’s POV. He then proceeded to talk about other events that included the rest of the characters in a third person’s POV. Now that’s genius. I do not have any negative thing to say about this book.
I give We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies a rating of four out of four stars because I enjoyed everything about it. I do not do this because I am a nice person who does not wish to hurt the author’s feelings. I am doing this because I genuinely think that this book deserves it. I did not dislike anything in it (I liked it all). Its stellar editing is the icing on the cake for me.
Magic has always fascinated me. I am not a strong believer in it, but the thought of a world where magic flows and is practiced freely excites me. We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a book that feeds my fantasy. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants a book about adventure and magic.
