Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice by Craig W. Stanfill is a novel in the science fiction or speculative fiction category. This book is the first in a series that sheds light on a world overrun by artificial intelligence (AI).
In this debut novel, we are introduced to Kim, who works for the Artificial Intelligence Company by training the automatons. She lives in a mediocre residential district with an efficient housebot and a contemptuous fridge. For years, Kim has lived a normal life but the return of her childhood friend shakes up the stability she worked for over the years. An adventure with a friend turns into an incident that starts a chain of events that changes Kim’s life as she knows it.
What I enjoy about the Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice is how seemingly realistic and approachable the technology is; how it projects the technology of the future as the technology of now. It doesn’t burden readers with technological jargon but still presents artificial intelligence as futuristic. It is a testament to the in-depth grasp Stanfill, as a professional in the field with a Doctorate, has of artificial intelligence. I also greatly enjoyed how Stanfill presented virtual reality (VR); I found it mentally engaging and stimulating that I even imagined the VR scenes unfold before my very eyes.
There’s nothing I majorly dislike about this book. I think it is a good introduction to a stylized and sophisticated dystopian world. Apart from the inspiration books mentioned in the Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice’s blurb, I could also see elements of Hunger Games with the separations of the districts and some of the outrageous fashion they had. However, I found the use of she/her pronouns exclusively to be a little bit confusing. While I appreciate the effort to use other neutral wordings, it was still difficult to get used to. Apart from that, there is I had no other major issue with this book.
I would give this Terms of Service: Subject to Change Without Notice a rating of 4 out of 4 stars, with its exceptionally edited writing and stellar story-telling. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes the science fiction genre and themes of revolution and resistance. This book doesn’t have explicitly vulgar or profane words but it does contain scenes depicting sexual intimacy and encounters, so I would not recommend it to younger audiences or those who are sensitive to this subject matter. I think readers who enjoy young adult book series such as Hunger Games and Divergent would enjoy this book as well.
