Dr. Matthew Martin is a professor of biology who finally gets a chance to present his theory on psychic phenomena to the world. Abael Fielder is Chief of Staff to the President of the United States. Confined to a wheelchair with a lifelong debilitating illness, he has a secret that will soon be revealed. Fitzgerald Jinkins created Paradeisia, described as 137 square miles of tropical paradise. Even more spectacular than the island itself is what workers discover after digging below ground. Add in an assortment of other interesting characters; the FBI; plus the CDC and you have quite an interesting story.
What does the island now called Paradeisia have to do with a secret called ‘EPU-1350’ by the French? Someone knows and somehow the actions of all the characters in the book will come full circle. Aubrey ends up on the island as part of her new job duties. The beauty of the place fascinates her, but something strange is going that Fitzgerald Jinkins is not telling. Deep underground is the greatest treasure of all, but something is just not right. People on the island have been disappearing, and only one returned after three years with a strange tattoo. Dr. Zhen’s launch into the ice underneath Antarctica goes off without a hitch until he loses control of his underwater pod which is now traveling toward a totally different destination. His partner in the mission also has a strange tattoo. Now I am thinking that all of these events must tie in together in some way and maybe Dr. Martin’s psychic phenomena has something to do with it.
The most disturbing thing is that women are beginning to die horribly from some strange and deadly virus that seems to be millions of years old. The CDC issues a quarantine, but they have no idea what they are trying to cure. Will many more die before they find out? In addition, the FBI realizes that hundreds of people considered as “special” in some way have disappeared. The big question is who abducted them, why, and could the government have a part in this madness?
This book has so many stories going on at the same time and each one is so intriguing. I got totally immersed in the strange happenings and the story ended before I got any answers to the many questions that I had. I just know that all of this stuff ties together in some way, but I guess I am going to have to wait for the next book to come along before the truth unfolds. I racked my brain trying to figure out how people dropping dead from a virus connects to findings underground; and how Dr. Zhen getting lost underwater ties into Paradeisia and the mystery it has going on. If the author intended to whet my appetite, he surely succeeded and I recommend this book to anyone with any interest in mysterious and unexplained happenings. I give it four out of four stars, not only because of the content, but because it left me with my mouth hanging open.
