Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Wilhelm, King of Voulhire, was once a wicked ruler known as the Emperor of Lullabies. The King feared that his sons would fight to become the emperor or overthrow him. He moved his four sons to their own islands that were just off his empire on the mainland. He gave each son soldiers and weapons to defend their new islands from invaders. Galen, one of the sons, travels from the Lands of Princes to Voulhire after his great uncle passed and left him a forge. The great uncle hired an executor to find Galen and bring him to the town called Magnum Caelum. Upon arrival, he is greeted and taken care of by the town, but he could not help but feel like he somehow cheated fate. His plan to settle in the city and take over his great uncle’s forge goes awry when strange things begin to happen throughout Voulhire. The horrific and mysterious events occurring make his original plan next to impossible. Each son has their own adventures, challenges, and trials in the book.
The author has such a way with words and descriptions to help the reader visualize and dive into the world. The author builds up the antagonist and his background even before introducing him to the plot of the book. The approach taken is concise yet descriptive and imaginative.
I enjoyed the different perspectives throughout the book. Seeing the world from different eyes was intriguing. I loved the witty banter and jokes between the characters it really made them come alive with their different personalities. Each character had their own distinct personality shaped by their past and current experiences. I liked the details that the author put in. Specifically, the illusions at the gate that the guards had to deal with based on their logic and reasoning.
I rate We are Voulhire by Matthew Tysz a 4 out of 4 stars. The book was extremely imaginative and creative. The book was exceptionally well-edited. The flow of the book was perfect with the different perspectives being narrated and separated by chapters. The author builds and sets the world up for the upcoming books thoughtfully and beautifully.
I would recommend this book to anyone who likes fantasy and magic books. Anyone who likes witty banter and expansive worlds would also enjoy this book. I would recommend this to young adults as well as adults. I look forward to continuing through this series.
