Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: a new arrival under great skies by Matthew Tysz is a beautiful high fantasy novel.
Hillport is attacked by a powerful mage, Meldorath. He, after raising serious accusations against Lord Orlin, decrees his death sentence and in turn proclaims himself Lord of the city.
Soon, however, also Meldorath is accused of terrible acts and the King himself condemns him to death. Not everyone, however, believes that such a powerful and dangerous maghe is really dead.
Meanwhile, young Galen, a kind-hearted boy, leaves his dangerous homeland, where a devastating war rages, and sets out for the prosperous land of Voulhire.
This land, however, is not perfect as it seems: a group of rebels, the Riva Rohavi, wait in the shadows for the moment to attack.
This novel was a wonderful surprise for me: from the very first lines, Tysz managed to capture my attention, through the spectacular entry into the scene of Meldorath, my favorite character. I appreciated the way he is described: he is a man of light and shadow, who is designated as "bad" but who, in reality, hides much more than he seems.
Galen is also a beautiful character: it is impossible not to empathize with a boy with such a painful past who, with his intelligence and apparent simplicity, manages to build a new life.
I appreciated that it is not easy to understand individual personalities: there is much more than what appears on the surface.
I also liked the division into chapters organized so as to switch from one character to another, showing to the reader different points of view. The author goes from one to another in a very natural way.
The style is fresh and compelling: the action scenes are described smoothly and also the magic is very interesting; it has its own philosophy and, for the first time, I found it sometimes scary.
Perhaps, the greatest merit of this book is that it doesn’t seem to anything else that I have already read: it is original, exciting and complex.
Tysz has created a real world, complete with a dictionary, which is very useful for the reader.
The story intrigues me and I can’t wait to read the sequel.
It’s hard to find something I didn’t like, maybe some words repetition but nothing disturbing. Surely, the merits far outweigh the possible defects of this work.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars: I really liked it. The author deserves this assessment for having managed to create a complete world: he deepens politics, religion, economy, magic, war and even the rebels of his world. There is just everything you need to make a book exciting but also deep.
I recommend this reading to all lovers of high fantasy or action novels that also have a deep social and political base.
