Review of The Devil Pulls the Strings
The devil pulls the strings by J. W. Zarek is a fantasy-based storyline entwined with a rich blend of magic, adventurous time travel, vampiric immortals, sarcasm and humour. Boone Daniels, a swashbuckling night and handyman at the renaissance fares gifted with a form of eidetic memory and synesthesia; the ability to taste things and see colours when they listen to music, was forced to take Flynn's place; his best friend, after a jousting accident incapacitates him. With a major performance at the corner, Boone promises to fill in for Flynn as the lead vocalist in New York City. “It’s just a simple set to perform”…or so he thought. He was soon surprised by a falling piano, armed gunmen shooting at him, magic swords, and time travel to retrieve music pieces that could summon the devil and sapphire; the equivalent of a breath of fresh air after a deep dive. Zarek’s effortless mingling of time travel, breath-stopping danger and suspense will fuel one's curiosity to turn the page!
The devil pulls the strings had me flipping pages as fast as my eyes could read. The unpredictability of the book is amazing, just when you think you understand the plot, ‘bang’..., bullets ricocheting, ‘wobble’..., time travel portals materialising from thin air, ‘grrrraaahhhhh’..., undying vampires trying to kill your younger self in the past…the plot is encapsulating! As a music lover, the quest to discover hidden musical masterpieces by world-famous violinist Niccolo Paganini, which can only be played once every hundred years, the search for the blue rose to produce the glowing ink that will make the secret music visible, the dangers that lie at every turn, kept my fingers turning those pages. Boone goes from being a simple handyman, aided by sapphire, detective Rizos, melusines cup, pip, and even Lapuska, all being antagonised by the dragons and nymph society, and Baba Yaga, to a valiant time travelling, a vampire-slaying hero that aims to save the world. one wouldn’t be more mistaken to claim he can predict the plot in this masterpiece!
The Fine blend of individual characters, sarcasm, humour, and terror made this a book I enjoyed. I found no fault whatsoever with it
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I took note of no typographical errors.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves fantasy-based adventurous novels with great storylines and plots. A great read, cover to cover.
