Review of The Mars Debacle
The Mars Debacle is about the adventure of a physicist Will Carlan that was relocated against his will to a remote outpost on earth's closest neighbour - the Mars. In the age where Earth —as well as colonies across the Solar System—are dominated by two terrestrial governments deadlocked in an ongoing struggle for supremacy: the faux-democratic United Planet (UP) and the neo-Marxist Tasurbomurians. They'd barely had time on the red planet when it was invaded by the Tasurbomurians in response to a missing Tasurbomurian space ship near Uranus. In the struggle for survival, Carlan and his co survivors had to flee Mars, and their only hope was the heart of Alpha Centauria, a place where Earthlings and Arcans aren't welcome. Was it really a solution or a dead end? Did Carlan and his co survivors even make it back to North America? Read this fascinating book to discover that.
I can usually tell if I'm going to like a book by reading the first couple of pages. After I read the first two chapters of this book, I didn't want to stop. It was a whole different world and what sealed the deal for me was how vivid the descriptions were. I have never been on a space ship nor been to Mars but the author paid attention to every little detail, and each character was special.
Mark Dean Stratus knows his settings intimately, obviously, and describes them deftly. And the space travel was brilliantly done. Easy to understand, yet essential to the plot. The layers to the story grow page after page. Although it started slow but as the pace picked up everything started to make sense. The tale is peopled with numerous interesting characters ranging from military types to physicists.
Mark Dean Stratus expertly designs a complex space travel which is so effortlessly described that it can be understood by every audience, and the suspense keeps the reader turning the pages in anticipation, even beyond the last sentence. The technologies in this book is evolutionary believable and theoretically possible in decades to come. Brilliant storytelling how humans find themselves in a different world with an enemy that can tear them apart, whose tech seems to be better than theirs (humans) but they eventually found a way out.
I wasn't really feeling it at first because of the slight slow starting, but it turned out to be thoroughly intriguing story provided in an enjoyable well-paced manner.
It was exceptionally well edited also, so I'll give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. Slightly slow starting but I'll let that slide because every other thing was fascinating.
If you're into great sci-fi, then this is definitely for you. Plenty of actions, great tech, and everything else that makes for terrific sci-fi reading.
