We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in a fantasy series full of magic and political intrigue. The main character Galen Bray is a refugee who has inherited a blacksmith’s forge in the idyllic Voulhire, a kingdom very different from his war-ravaged homeland. His optimism and innocence are tested when Voulhire becomes mired in political conflict. Galen might once again find himself in a war-torn land with enemies all around.

The book was written in first person and third person and was told from multiple points of view. I found the fantasy world the author created to be believable and well structured. I liked the main villain; he was intriguing and mysterious with tales of his exploits slowly revealed throughout the story. The politics were interesting; I appreciated reading about the situation from the king’s perspective, as well as from a commander’s perspective and a villager’s perspective. The book ended on a strong cliffhanger, leaving me wondering what will happen next in Voulhire. I liked how the author also provided a website where more information can be found about the fantasy world.

While I enjoyed the story, it took me a while to understand the layout of the fantasy world and the political conflict. This could have been solved if the chapter “We are Riva” was used as the prologue. This chapter explains the history and turmoil between the kingdoms without spoilers. I also would have liked more chapters with Galen Bray; even though he was the main character his sections in the book were small. I found myself drawn out of the story during a scene where a brother and sister talk about ice hockey, football, and gymnastics. These sports felt out of place in fantasy; perhaps a description of ice hockey or football could have been used instead.

I would rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. It was a great start to a fantasy series. There were very few errors and misspelled words; the book appears to have had an editor. The author also provided a glossary at the end of the book with definitions for words only found in this world.

I would recommend this book to people who enjoy reading fantasy novels. This series would be suitable for an adult audience. There were instances of vulgar language and sexual references which would not be suitable for young adults or children.
