Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a science fiction, the first book in the We are Voulhire Series. Imagine a reality where our human world neighbors a magic world full of mages with powers to do supernatural things. Then, go ahead and imagine a situation where we must go to war and fight battles against these creatures. This crazy imagination is just a taste of what this action-packed book contains.
The book commences with the story of Galen Bray from the Land of Princes. His hometown is not in a perfect state due to a fierce civil war. He gets a communication from his dying uncle to go and claim his inheritance. This message sends him on a long journey to the Land of Voulhire, where all the action is. Voulhire is a strange kingdom, and he learns this right from the moment he steps out into the ground. His uncle had left him an executor, Rowan, who guided him through the familiarization and inheritance process. He soon learns about the kingdom's politics and the vices that ail it. He, instinctively, becomes part of the struggle for a better future in Voulhire. King Wilhem has the challenge of fighting those opposing him in his government. On top of that, he ignorantly starts a war with the mages from Caromentis. He finds himself in quite a difficult place, but is he wise enough to maneuver through these challenges?
I have to state right away that Matthew performed excellently in this book. The quality of writing was top-notch, and the creativity impeccable. He described the places and characters in the book vividly and gave them much-needed life and authenticity. The imagination, especially regarding Caromentis, was exceptional. I kept imagining this magical place with magical people. I was even awed more when he made these two worlds face off in a well-thought-out battle. It was thrilling and kept me flipping the pages. I also loved that it wasn't all about the brutality, the emotions brought by the scenes and different characters made the stories authentic.
It was a clever move by the author to tell the stories from different perspectives. It gave the reader a diverse look into the fantastic land of Voulhire. I would have been mixed up and confused in the stories were it not for the glossary on the book's initial pages. They gave good guidance and made for a great reference. I also have to mention Galen's lovable, brave and relatable character as one of the things I enjoyed about this book.
I did not enjoy some brutal scenes in the book, but I appreciate their necessity in advancing the stories. They will, therefore, not affect my overall opinion of the book. I loved every other thing about it and, as a result, gave it a perfect four out of four stars rating. It is exceptionally well-edited, as I noticed no errors. It contained some mild sexual scenes and profanity. I'd recommend this book to lovers of science and fiction. Those interested in magic will also find it fascinating.
