Case of the Weeping Museum: Case Files of the New York Paranormal Investigations by Michael Stevens is a short story which can be placed in the science fiction/horror genre. The story is about Samika Gupta, a paranormal investigator in New York City and how she investigates a case of paranormal activity.
Two years ago she had lost her father in an accident and now she has returned to New York City to carry forward his work. Her father, the late Manvir Gupta, had laid the foundation of New York Paranormal Investigations. Now Samika, or Sam as she is known, and her small team of investigators solve cases involving unexplained, paranormal incidents. The story is written from the point of view of Samika and follows how she and her team investigate the recent case of paranormal activity in the museum.
This is a very crisp story and does not waste any time on creating unnecessary scenes of horror. The approach of the author towards paranormal activity in this story is so scientific that I did not feel an ounce of horror while reading this story. In this aspect, this story was quite different from any other short story I have read surrounding paranormal activity. Most writers would focus on the horror element and attempt to frighten the readers. On the other hand, this story focuses more on creating the element of suspense to keep the reader intrigued. The author succeeds in keeping just the right amount of suspense for a story of this length and does not overdo the theatrics at any point. The author does not slip from the genre of science fiction and the writing style is pretty consistent.
The author develops the protagonist’s character with sufficient depth. The reader gets a glimpse into the mind of Samika and can feel the undertone of some internal struggle in her. Samika's character is stout-hearted, purposeful and a caffeine-addict. The author has craftily alluded to some mystery behind her tendency to overwork herself, keeping the reader intrigued so that they would be waiting for the next case to learn her secret.
I was slightly disappointed with the climax of the story because the build-up of suspense throughout the story had raised my expectations regarding the conclusion. That aside, this story is definitely something different from what I have read so far in this genre and I was completely immersed in the story. I rate it 4 out of 4.
