Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is consist of a lot of characters, each one has its own personality and different views in life. The story introduces a man name Galen from the Land of Princes who travels into Voulhire to start a new life. Through Galen's eyes, the author tries to bring us the world of Voulhire from an outsider's point of view. The story then mostly takes us to Meldorath and Castle Hillport. How everyone in Voulhire was drawn to Meldorath's actions and the castle he had chosen to terrorize. The story was divided into two focus: 1. Through Galen's eyes we were given a fresh insights of the land; 2. Through the citizens of Voulhire, we had the opportunity to experience the terror of Meldorath's actions, the Riva Rohavi's ambitions, King Wilhelm's vision and Lord Eldus' ideologies.
As someone who is a fan of fiction stories, the author's way of telling it through Galen was a good way to make me look forward in the adventure of the unknown. The way he keeps the whole story and only let a few details out was also good to keep a reader's interest to delve in more. The concept of rumors and truth was also portrayed in the story and having to question who was right or wrong, good or evil is a good way to make a reader feel involved. The story has a potential when it comes to its plot and leaves path for more possibilities in terms of character and story development. The cliffhanger was also on point keeping you wander what would happen in the next series.
However, as the story involves and showcases a lot of characters and settings, there are instances that I got confuse from the transition of one character/setting to another. I understand that the author was trying to not reveal the whole personality of each characters to keep the mystery, however as a reader, I was looking for that one character that will make me feel connected to the story. Not much was explained in this first book regarding the main and minor characters but only tackled on the basics of Voulhire world.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. The book in general was good and the way it was set to be followed by another series. For some, this book might appear boring due to its slow paced build up, but this first book was a good setup to look forward to the next ones
I recommend this book to readers who loved series books and fantasies. The story was also heavy on the concept of Magic and different dimensions that well most likely appeal to fiction readers. However, since this particular book has a slow-pace start, this might not appeal to fiction readers that can easily get bored. Although, the final chapters of the book might make them stick and delve more to the world of Voulhire.
