Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an excellent introduction to the We Are Voulhire series. In this novel, we meet a multitude of main characters that populate the fantasy lands of the Voulhire multiverse. When Dakehei Meldorath arrests Lord Odin of Hilltop, King appoints Eldrus Alderman the new Lord of Hilltop, an impoverished city with economic potential. Meanwhile, from the Land of the Princes, a misnamed nation of poverty and hopelessness, Galen Bray embarks on the journey to his inheritance of his uncle's forge in Magnum Caelum, Voltaire. Rowan, the executor of Galen's uncle's estate, continues to assist Galen after the transfer of deeds. Does he have an ulterior motive? Lady Indara Nightly seems to have indeterminate loyalties. Other interesting characters include Beverly, the only servant to survive the the violent removal of the last two Hilltop Lords, Beth, an explorer from the Caromentis, and Alabaster de Lasette, a crazy old bio-mage.
This is a layered, thought-provoking book. The positives of this novel include multiple engaging storylines, well-developed characters and diverse cities. Each chapter title includes the name of the character from whose point of view it is written. Multiple layers of deception are implied. Meldorath, is he alive or isn't he? The Riva Rahavi, how dangerous are they? Though the book is a complete story in itself, it is obvious there are mysteries to uncover in future volumes. I look forward to reading the next installment in this series. The author also has a website containing more information about the multiverse.
I was unable to find any negative aspects of We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies. I found no errors or inconsistencies, and absolutely nothing to dislike about this story.
As this copy was a second edition, it was obviously professionally edited. Had it not been exceptionally well edited and organized, this book would have been very hard to follow.
I rate Matthew Tysz's We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies A perfect four out of four stars. I thoroughly enjoyed every moment I spent with this book. Whether or not I review the next volume, I will be reading the book.
I recommend this book for readers who enjoy a compelling fantasy story, without the usual emphasis on romance. This book is appropriate for all but the most sensitive of adult readers. Those who enjoy tales of magic, mystery, politics and war will find this an engaging story. I believe most readers of fiction will enjoy this novel.
