We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book entry in Tysz’s fantasy series We are Voulhire. It introduces us to the kingdom of Voulhire at the time of King Wilhelm providing in-depth information on Voulhirian society, its history, norms and faith. We are also informed of the internal dangers facing the kingdom and threatening its very existence. First, the powerful general of the Voulhirian Southern army Meldorath instills fear not just in Voulhirians but in the King himself thanks to his magical powers and dark exploits. Despite all attempts to imprison him and declare him dead Meldorath remains very much alive instilling fear and manipulating events in Voulhire. Secondly, the Riva Rohavi a rebel group whose very mission is to destroy Voulhirian society frequently carries out violent, malicious attacks often targeted towards undermining some effort of the kingdom. Their attacks are identified with sadistic feathers and dancing and instill fear amongst the common people. Last but not least, the Voulhirian leadership faces significant weaknesses from division to corruption. It is all so daunting, that King Wilhelm states, “…there’s a difference between knowing evil and seeing it, living in its midst, and sometimes, in a way, having to be part of it. It does things to the mind, leads one to doubt.”

All this is unknown to Galen Bray a refugee from The Lands of the Princes when he arrives in Voulhire. Wide eyed, full of dreams and gratitude to Voulhire for his new life, Galen embarks on a path to make the most success of his new life in the kingdom.

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a remarkable book to say the least. It is magical because it immerses the reader in a whole new world, full of fascinating people and magnificent landscapes. I also loved that the idea of magic, faith and science is discussed. I have great interest in these topics. Finally, from to time I came across deep, useful and meaningful quotes. Galen Bray’s grandmother for instance, said, “See the good in everything and the best of it will find you.” Galen’s uncle, on the other hand, gave him remarkable advice saying, “Keep your head low, but your eyes ahead. Keep your mind on earth, but your heart among the stars.” It made reading very interesting and exciting.

There was nothing I disliked about the book. A part of me wished that it was just one book and not a series. I was really following the story and hated to have to wait for another book for its continuation. Nevertheless, this does not affect the merit of the novel itself. It was well crafted and an ingenious work of Tysz. I am also sure that each book contains a lot of wealth and thought that I wouldn’t want to miss out on. I would love to see the book and the We are Voulhire series as a whole made into a movie. I believe it would be a hit.

I give We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies a rating of 4 out of 4 stars. It is a great introduction to the We are Voulhire series. I enjoyed reading it so much that I cannot wait to embark on the next book. The story is gripping and addictive. I enjoyed every single storyline and would love to follow the series to the very end. The plot is not cliché and the book was exceptionally well edited. I found no errors. I therefore feel that it deserves the highest rating.

If you love fantasy novels, you will love We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies. Expect talk of rare objects, monks, magicians, new ideas and different worlds. Reading the book is like a journey itself and there is a sense of wonder that comes with it. I would also recommend it to philosophical minds. It is written with underlying concepts that provoke thought. It explores the idea of a world ruled by the different forces of faith, science and magic as well as the idea of magic being a part of daily life and everyday use. The ideas are very easy to consider in light of our everyday life and reality. The things discussed are not difficult to imagine and are interesting too.

I really appreciate all of the background on this fictional place. It makes the rest of the book easier to understand.
