Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a fantasy novel by Matthew Tysz. This is the first book in the series. The story is set in the Medieval Age, in the magical land of Voulhire.
Voulhire is a prosperous land, experiencing its golden years, with economic stability and social structure that no one dares to question. However, the last two political scandals that the city of Hillport has endured, demonstrated that Voulhire is, in fact, unstable. The recently appointed Lord Eldus plans to change that and bring Hillport a great future, but the ghost of one of his predecessors might threaten everything.
Magic is infused into Voulhire, but it comes from Caromentis, and those who learn it answer to different interests. Caromentis exists alongside Voulhire, but unlike Voulhire this is not a physical but a magical world.
Galen Bray had no expectations when he fled from the Lands of the Princes, onto a ship bound for Voulhire. The only thing in his mind was that his great-uncle managed to secure him a place to leave his war-torn land. For Galen, this was a fresh start, a new beginning, and a world of opportunities. But Galen has no idea how life truly is in Voulhire, will his ignorance, or maybe innocence, help him or destroy the new opportunities he has?
There are many things I liked in this book. We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies has a complex plot and is narrated from different perspectives. The sub-plots narrated by each character are not pieced together at the end of the book; instead, it has several cliffhangers that were a magnificent way to end this book.
When different characters are narrating, it is hard to give each a unique voice, but Matthew Tysz did it magnificently. The narrative was captivating from the first page until the last one. The book is also realistic and very descriptive, the author did a great job creating the scene, events, and characters. The book has a map of Voulhire and a glossary at the end, which I truly enjoyed.
There was nothing I disliked about this book, my only complaint is that my copy seemed to duplicate the page number on some occasions, but this in no way is the author’s fault.
Overall, I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is perfectly and professionally edited, as I only found one minor error. The book covers several topics and perfectly incorporates them into this fantasy world.
I recommend this book to those who enjoy fantasy and fiction, medieval stories, and love good cliffhangers. A warning for the readers, sexual abuse is mentioned and implied but not described.
