Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in the We are Voulhire series. It is a science fiction novel composed of magic, mysteries, and adventures. This fantastic book revolves around the Kingdom of Voulhire, a small yet rich and powerful monarch.
A wicked and powerful emperor had four sons whom he suspected were plotting to overthrow him and equally share his empire amongst themselves. He decided to expel the sons from his palace and gave them each a chain of islands and an army to defend them. For some time, the islands thrived with wealth and happiness. However, two years later, there was sibling rivalry for sole possession of the entire chain of islands. The rivalry tore the Lands of the Princes into unending war, consequently deteriorating their state.
Galen Bale, the protagonist, had lived his entire life in the Lands of the Princes. The constant war in the land resulted in starvation and utmost poverty. In this country racked by war, survival was far from guaranteed. Galen found a way out of the hell hole when he received passage papers to inherit his estranged uncle's estate. Following a long and tiresome journey, he arrived at Magnum Caelum, a city in Voulhire. It was a flourishing and wealthy country. It offered him hope and dreams. Although he struggled to adjust to his new life at first, he was grateful for it and the opportunities it provided. Magnum Caelum was a breathtaking town with a plethora of led lighting, resources, and prospects. People in this place worked swiftly and hard. Galen thought of every day as a brand-new adventure, but he was unaware that the adversary could attack his new residence anytime. Voulhire harbored the most dangerous of men, Riva Rohavi, the enemy, who frequently attacked. One would be interested to know if Galen would flourish in his new home or whether it was much like the nation he had fled.
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies had several positive aspects. First, the author started with several intertwined stories to set the ball rolling. These fast and easy stories formed the foundation for the book's plot, gradually developing it while creating strong-built characters. The author also alternates between past events with current happenings. The prowess with which he links these events and ensures a smooth flow is noteworthy. I liked how the book puts the truth concerning the world in the limelight. It outlines the state of unfairness in the world and how the concept of "survival for the fittest" applies.
The only negative aspect of the book is the lack of a defined table of contents for the chapters of the book for the format (EPUB format for me). This error made it hard to jump into different sections, especially for cross-referencing in earlier chapters. Apart from that, I found no grammatical errors. The book was edited exemplary. I, therefore, rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. The author did a great job, and I hope to read other books in the series.
I recommend this book to lovers of fiction and fantasy. The book contains violence and occasional vulgar language, thus suitable for readers in the appropriate age bracket.
