Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
The epic fantasy book We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz immerses the reader in the difficult and harsh realm of Voulhire. With a well-designed setting and complex characters, it is a tale of political and socioeconomic upheaval, battle, siege, monks, magicians, fighters, brutes, and distraught families. It describes the struggles of a fictitious character named Glen Bray, who serves as the book's main protagonist.
Galen Bray is from the civil war-torn Lands of the Princes, where everyone has experienced poverty and war. By coincidence, he is given the opportunity to move to Voulhire, a wealthy nation with a fascinating past and uncertain political stability. Voulhire's current tranquility and peace pose a threat to the evil wizards and the bloodthirsty Riva Rohavi group of sadists. In addition, Midius Maido, the chairman of the Mianoran Council, must be faced by Voulhire's King Wilhelm. Maido is an arrogant, sneering heavyweight whose real motives are unclear. Lord Eldus Alderman is one of King Wilhelm's few genuine allies. Lord Eldus takes on the task of repairing Hillport, whose residents have suffered from the physical, psychological, and financial savagery of Lord Eldus' ancestors.
The way the many characters all have their moments to shine as the plot develops is something I really appreciated about this novel. Galen, for instance, isn't your usual protagonist with great power and intelligence or who is inspired by a goal. Galen Bray plays a very passive part in the narrative. As a recent immigrant to Voulhire, he is still becoming accustomed to the locals and their way of life. But because he is a person who will not put up with injustice or cruelty, I loved his character. It will be interesting to see how his character develops in the upcoming books.
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first of nine novels in the series; therefore, the reader will only get to meet a handful of characters and see a limited number of locations. Not much is known about the characters or the world outside of the kingdom of Voulhire. The tale came to an abrupt finish. But this simply increased my interest in what will happen next.
This book contains 174 pages. There are about 21 chapters in it. The overall number of chapters may be a little bit higher or lower, because the book lacks a table of contents and has no chapter numbers. Several violent and gory incidents can be found in the book. Because these crimes are done with impunity, reading about them may distress sensitive readers. Therefore, I'll warn readers that the story contains some unpleasant elements.
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book from start to finish. This book was exceptionally well edited, since I discovered no grammatical problems while reading it. I'll rate it a perfect 4 out of 4 stars as a result. I'll suggest this book to fans of fantasy. In addition, for those who have never read fantasy before, this book will make a delightful introduction to the genre.
