Kitty and the Midnight Hour by Carrie Vaughn

Post by BVos25 »

This is the first book of a series narrated by the main character Kitty Norville, who works at a radio station in Denver, CO. She’s also a submissive werewolf in the local werewolf pack. She tries to accept about her situation with the werewolves, but she is growing tired of it by the start of the story.

By accident she starts a late night show on the radio for the “supernaturally challenged.” It starts off as a question to her audience, and the next day her boss wants her to do whatever she did the night before; the ratings had soared during her shift. She gave an outlet to the supernatural community and gave those people someone they could relate to when she admits to being a werewolf on the air. Kitty’s new found show has given her new purpose and it stokes some growth in the character. It eventually snowballs into more people talking about it, and creates some tension for Kitty when some creatures of the night are unhappy with what she’s saying.

Carrie Vaughn’s book is not all super serious, there’s quite a bit of humor to be found here. The attempts on the main character’s life never go quite as planned, and Kitty tells you the story through a fog of disbelief that keeps the story lighthearted. Only a handful of characters in the large cast take themselves too seriously, and it was quite refreshing to read this an actually laugh out loud at some things that Kitty or someone else says or does.

Carrie’s writing style was very easy to me to read, it flowed effortlessly and before I knew it the book was over and I was already looking for the next. The series is a long one, but the books are small overall with a good helping of short stories on the side.

Try this out, it is one of my favorites and I'm still head over heals for some of the supporting characters. If you like urban fantasy, or want to try it out I think you'll find something you like here.
