We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is the first book in the We are Voulhire series written by Matthew Tysz. Readers are transported to the mystical realm of Voulhire, filled with its own laws and ways of life, where fantasy and the Middle Ages collide.

Galen Bray pays a visit to collect his recently deceased uncle's fortune. He comes from a nation that has been devastated by war, so getting to Voulhire presents many obstacles. As soon as he arrives, the king of Voulhire has to deal with a number of alarming events happening in the south of the country. This causes the leadership to move from Orlin to Lord Meldorath, who is then overthrown and replaced by Lord Eldus.

The author gives readers a map of the whole planet right from the start. A New Arrival under Great Skies examines many regions on the map throughout the book. The culture and manner of life in each of those regions are unique and special. And if things ever grow too complicated, Matthew Tysz has prepared a dictionary of terms at the conclusion.

As a reader, I really appreciate how hard the author worked to make this culture seem real. You can tell a lot even from the book's brief descriptions of a couple of places. It gets you curious about the other parts of the planet and the way they are progressing. I also want to say that the editors of the book did a great job because I didn't find any errors in it. This contributed to the book's overall impression. What really stood out to me was the author's detailed explication of several facets of life in Voulhire. This aided in forming an image of the kingdom in my head. It's almost like watching a movie as he describes the prologue, where Lord Meldorath arrives, and the battle with Lord Orlin's guards, where he utilizes magic to defeat them. He goes into great detail about many cities, like the wealthy city of Virko and Soulhire, the capital of Voulhire. The book's structure is another thing I really like. The characters are presented methodically, with lots of details, building suspense for what promises to be a thrilling ending. Tysz also makes excellent use of excitement, which keeps the reader turning pages.

I had a great time reading A New Arrival under Great Skies, that's why I rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I can't think of anything negative about it that would justify deducting a star. Anyways, due to the many shifts in setting and characters, the beginning of the novel may be a little disorienting. Understanding the eventual intricacy of the events takes a few chapters.

I would recommend this book to adults interested in fantasy and world-building stories. Some reasons why I think it is not suitable for minors are that it contains a lot of profanity, some sexual themes, and references to pedophilia.
