Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a fantasy novel about a strange land where scientists, magicians, and medieval-like warriors exist. This book records how its people swim against the tide of evil and the threat of war. The story's star is Galen, a young man who was fortunate enough to leave his country to start a new life in that strange land. His uncle had just kicked the bucket, giving him an express ticket out of the horror ground he called his home. This was his chance to start all over and live the kind of life his king denied him for so long. To his king, the war he waged with the neighboring kingdoms was more important than the lives of his subjects. Unknown to Galen, despite Voulhire being the land flowing with milk, honey, and endless opportunities, an evil was slowly creeping across its lands, and death was staring the people in their faces. How unlucky can one man be? Do you think Galen would have been better off in his home country?
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies intrigued me because it revealed what humans are capable of doing when we are desperate. It also gives a good idea of how wicked we can be to each other just because we can. One beautiful thing about the book is that it is not your typical medieval-themed novel, and the people in it do not have modern-day technology. I saw Matthew Tysz combine some of the scientific discoveries of today with the things we know belong in the past to make the story unique. I will not explain how exactly he did that because it would just give away the very thing that made me see the story is unique to you, which may deny you the desire to read it.
Matthew Tysz also included the stories of so many characters, which made this book quite interesting to read. He provided backstories for some of the characters whose stories he told us and kept us wondering about the past of others, like Meldprath. This added to the suspenseful effect that I believe Matthew Tysz was going for, which is what I have come to like most about the book.
I had a wonderful experience letting Matthew Tysz take me by the hand and show me things about Voulhire that only he knew. The people's culture and way of life mesmerized me and kept me glued to the pages of this novel. Fortunately, I cannot fault anything at all in the book. For starters, it was edited exceptionally well. Secondly, it was filled with a good deal of suspense and had me asking important questions about all its characters. Thirdly, it was very interesting, which I believe I have already said in this review. In summary, I did not see any negative things about it, and because of that, I give it a rating of 4 out of 4 stars.
I recommend We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies to those who love reading stories about magicians, heroes, and masters of evil. This is a fantasy novel, so readers who enjoy books in that genre will immensely enjoy reading this book.
