Galen Bray leaves the war-torn Lands of the Princes as a twist of fate brings his well-off uncle from the Kingdom of Voulhire to find him and name him his heir before he passes away. In this flourishing kingdom, Galen gains experience in the forge of his late uncle as a blacksmith. He also finds company in the person of Rowan, the executor of his uncle, and Demetrius, an imbuer who will aid him in identifying the peculiar rock they came across in the mining town of Alcovia. However, opposition looms in the land where he hopes to find a better life. The fear of Dalehei Meldorath, a great mage and former lord of Hillport, continues to live among the survivors on the southern coasts. Meanwhile, the nonconformist group Riva Rohavi unleashes violence of great severity. Adding to the suspense, interactions with the magical realm of Caromentis bring different power to the physical world whose consequences are yet to be known.

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a promising beginning of an exciting series. It explores magic, science, and politics with an intricacy that lays a good foundation for the rest of the story. The details put in every component of the story is commendable. First, the setting was well-developed. We can read about the belief systems, political affairs, commerce, and various ways of living in Voulhire. We can also experience the contrast between the impoverished Lands of the Princes, the prosperous city of Yamon Soul, and the simple town of Magnum Caelum based on the author's descriptions. As for the characters, each of them fulfills a purpose. In every chapter that introduces a new figure, the author allows the readers to see the thoughts and motives of the individual. I encountered characters that can each be distinguished based on their personalities and qualities. More interestingly, there are intriguing characters whose true intentions remain a mystery. Also, the background characters support the story. For example, we can feel the dark experiences the people of Hillport suffered from their former lords. By comparison, we see the people of Yamon Soul unaffected by those crimes as they have a life of their own in their glorious city. Lastly, even though the plot was unconventional because of the author's focus on establishing the scene and the cliffhanger ending, Tysz wrote it in a way that readers would look forward to the following books of the series.

I dislike nothing about the book. The author skillfully broached the disturbing subjects without putting the readers off. The unique names of the people and places are also not difficult to recall because there is a glossary and a map as a reader's additional guide. I found two errors that were not a bother to my reading.

The book deserves a four out of four. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is worth the read. It is well-edited, features realistic characters, and leaves little chance for plotholes.

Because of the sexual innuendos and violent scenes, I recommend this book to mature readers. It is perfect for lovers of stories with magical elements with a storyline that remains realistic.
