We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an excellent first installment of the We are Voulhire book series. The story follows a naive and optimistic Galen Bray, from the war-torn Land of the Princes, who has found his way to the small town of Magnum Caelum in Voulhire to run his deceased long-lost uncle’s blacksmith shop, “Onita Steel”. With the help of his uncle’s executor, Rowan, Galen is able to learn more about Magnum Caelum and the darkness that lingers under the beautiful country of Voulhire. In a world where magic, mages, and power collide, King Wilhelm Arcolo attempts to maintain power over his advanced and knowledgeable kingdom and stifle the fears that have spread about the powerful mage, Lord Meldorath. This fear has lingered for a very long time, almost as if woven into the very fiber of Voulhire, just waiting for the opportunity to snap.

This is a wonderfully edited and intriguing book. The descriptions of the different cities in Voulhire were excellent. The reader could imagine themselves touring the cities and grasp the different functions of the cities. Some cities in Voulhire were more developed and advanced than others. In addition, the characters were well-developed. The fact that the book is told from multiple perspectives adds to the air of mystery and intrigue. It is a perfect blend of magic, science, and religion while explaining that at the core there is not much difference between these things.

The only minor negative aspect I have of this book is that it did not have a timeline of events, and I was unsure of how many days had passed since we had last seen the characters. Notwithstanding, the story was written in a way that this was not an issue and it was still understandable. This highlights the skill of the author as Matthew Tysz can convey a lot in a few pages.

Overall, this is an excellent book that leaves the reader wanting to continue the series to see how the story develops. Therefore, I have to give it a rating of four out of four stars.

I would recommend this book to a mature audience as there were instances where pedophilia was mentioned. This could be triggering for some people. In addition, there were several instances of profanity, sexually suggestive content, and graphic descriptions of murder. Those who enjoy fantasy, magic, and adventure are sure to thoroughly enjoy this book and feel compelled to continue the series.
