Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
There are numerous unseen forces at work in the land of Voulhire and its neighboring kingdoms. Voulhire is prosperous and its people are proud. Galen, a young, maybe naïve, refugee from a neighboring war-torn country has much to learn about the land he now calls home. Good thing he has made some friends along the way who do seem to genuinely want him to succeed. Follow Galen as he tries to establish himself in a country whose foundation may be crumbling from within. We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a page-turner.
This first installment in Matthew Tysz’s series We are Voulhire introduces readers to many different characters from various socio-economic backgrounds and differing allegiances. Tysz does a masterful job introducing the different characters through the language they speak, their mannerisms, and their personal interests. As a first book, it does feel like there is more world building than plot happening at times. At the same time, it is easy to become invested in the path that Voulhire will take. I often found myself questioning the king’s motives and the sincerity of Galen, the young refugee. Every chapter is narrated from a different person’s perspective.
The story takes many twists and turns and there were a few surprises for me as I read. It was an easy read because I could picture the world Tysz had created due to his descriptive narration and informative dialogue. The religions were developed and the history of Voulhire was purposefully described and impactful on the current struggles the country is facing. Tysz built a world with substance. The magic system was described in a new way that made it easy to understand as a reader.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz. I rate it a 4 out of 4 stars. The book is well written and well edited. It is a great first book. I want to know what happens to Galen and the other characters involved. I am invested in Voulhire’s future. I want to know what happens next.
I would recommend this book to any reader over the age of 16 who enjoys fantasy. Some of the characters use course and inflammatory language. Some of the content I would also deem unsuitable for younger readers. There are descriptions of war crimes and other pretty dark subject matter that could offend gentle readers. Nothing is described graphically.
I will be buying and devouring the next books in the series.
