Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first book in the We are Voulhire series. It is a science fiction book full of mystery, mysticism, and adventures. The Kingdom of Voulhire is the focus of this fascinating book; a small monarchy with a thriving economy. The story of a great emperor with four sons who he feared were scheming to kill him and divide his realm among themselves opens the book. He thus resolved to expel his sons from his palace and provided them each with armies and a chain of islands to protect themselves. The islands enjoyed prosperity and pleasure for a while. Two years later, there was sibling competition for control of the whole island chain. As a result, the Lands of the Princes were torn apart and plunged into perpetual conflict.
The protagonist, Galen Bale, has spent his whole life in the Lands of the Princes. The ongoing war caused famine and extreme poverty. Survival in this war-torn country was far from certain. Galen discovered a route out of torment when he got passage papers to grant him passage to inherit his estranged uncle's estate. He arrived at Magnum Caelum, a city in Voulhire, after a long and exhausting voyage. It was a prosperous and opportunity-filled town. It gave him dreams and optimism. Although he initially struggled to adjust to his new life, he was grateful for it and the chances it offered. Magnum Caelum was a stunning location with many lights, resources, and opportunities. People at this place worked hard and quickly. Galen considered every day to be a new experience, but he was unaware that the adversary was able to breathe well in his new home. Voulhire, was frequently attacked by their adversary Riva Rohavi, which immensely threatened his survival in his newfound home.
There were some excellent aspects of We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies that I loved. First, the author begins with a series of interwoven storylines to get the ball moving. This short story gradually builds up the storyline for the novel, thereby constructing the backbone for the book with great characters. The author also switches between past and present occurrences. I mean, the skill with which he connects these events and ensures a fluid flow is fantastic. Another aspect I liked about the book was the scenic description of events. From the first page, the detailed description of the attacks in the beginning to the falling flower petals during the Feast of Human Hands gives the reader a vivid image and makes the reader feel a part of the book. I appreciated how the book highlights how survival for the fittest applies, the injustices in the world, and the constant fights that encompass those in power, albeit humorously.
Despite the book being a great read, I felt the EPUB format's absence of a table of contents and clearly defined chapters was a big drawback. Going into other chapters was challenging because of this error, especially because early chapters were so tough to grasp. Apart from that, I found no grammatical errors. The book was edited exemplary. I, therefore, rate the book 4 out of 4 stars. The author did a great job, and I hope to read other books in the series.
The book highlights various themes such as business, loyalty, family ties, betrayal, servitude, and friendships. I recommend it to lovers of fiction and fantasy. The book also contains violence and occasional vulgar language, thus suitable for readers in the appropriate age bracket. It is also recommended for lovers of logic, leadership traits, and readers of crime solving.
