We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first installment in the ongoing "We Are Voulhire" series. It is an epic fantasy divided into 27 parts and is written in first and third-person narration. Its defining themes are political and socio-economic turmoil, wars, and magic.

Galen Bray is introduced as having fled the land of the princes, where only the wealthy were able to survive civil wars, famine, and poverty, to Magnum Caelum, a small city in Voulhire, where he takes over the steel business of his late uncle. However, the security of Voulhire is threatened as the Riva Rohari begins to terrorize the citizens of Voulhire, hampering the peace of the kingdom. King Wilhelm imprisons Lord Meldorath, Lord of Hillport, for his evil deeds and assigns Lord Eldus to assist in the development of Hillport. The craving and need for power start an inevitable war in Voulhire when it is brought to light that one of the most powerful mages, former lord Meldorath, could still be waxing strong and planning a siege. Will he succeed? Has Galen fled one war just to find himself in another?

I love that the glossary of terms, concepts, and names unique to the Voulhire world was included at the end of the book. A map is also included at the book's beginning to assist readers in visualizing the kingdom of Voulhire. The plot of this book is very engaging as it is still an introduction to the numerous characters, their roles, and conflicts yet to be resolved. The author's description of the plot made it simple to picture and comprehend. The creation of the characters was top-notch. I love how relatable the character of Galen Bray is compared to a person in a foreign land. I feel like his naivety is going to change in the course of the story.

I was reasonably surprised to discover a lot of action in the first book of the series. It shows how much work the author has put into writing this book, and for that, I must applaud him. I found no negative aspects in this book and I found no errors while reading, thus the book is professionally edited, for this reason, I gladly give it a rating of four out of four stars.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy historical science fiction, magic, adventure, and political wars. However, it shouldn't be read by a younger audience because of the use of violence and mild profanity.
