We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is a novel in the sci-fi/fantasy genre. It explores the fictional world known as Voulhire and the lives led by the people in it. This book serves as the first volume in the We Are Voulhire series, and as such, the entirety of the novel was all about the author trying to familiarize the readers with the world and people associated with the series. The author weaves together a story filled with action, magic, politics, and adventure in this wonderful book.

The book opens with Galen Bray fleeing from the Land of Princes, a nation that has been reduced to a shell of its former self by sibling rivalry. He was able to escape on a ship, which took him to Magnum Caelum, a city in Voulhire, where he would come to inherit his uncle's forge and estate. Galen escaped to Voulhire in pursuit of a better life, but unknown to him, Voulhire has dirty secrets of its own too. Under the prosperity and happiness that are commonly associated with this place, you'll also find cruelty and corruption lurking.

Though the author implies that Galen is the main player in this story, it is hard for me to agree with that claim due to the way the story is structured. The whole story is built around the lives of the many vibrant characters in it. Each character is a key player in his own right, and their importance is shown by how strongly their lives are tied to the story.

There are so many significant characters in this book. We have Galen Bray, the protagonist of this story. I found his story very intriguing. Knowing the place he was coming from; a place full of brutality, I expected him to be a conniving and devilish person, but this was far from the truth. He turned out to be a man of solid values. I am interested in knowing how he would fit into this new world since it is obvious that he has an important role to play in how the story develops.

There is also Wilhelm Arcolo, the reigning king of Voulhire. He is adored by his subjects and regarded as a kind king by many. But later developments in the story had me doubting him. He strikes me as being a man of dubious character. You have to wonder if the reason he sent Eldus Alderman to Hillport was as gracious as it seemed or if it was more self-serving. And who can forget Rowan? The witty friend and savior of Galen. He had me wondering if there was an ulterior motive for him being so helpful to Galen. With so many interesting characters in this book, it was difficult for me to get bored.

We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies strikes me as being more focused on developing the characters as opposed to the focus on plot development that most novels adopt. I have to give it to Matthew Tysz. He did an amazing job. I didn't find any errors, and it was well-edited. I would give it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend this book to readers of fantasy novels.
