The Guardians: Inheritance, is the first book in a modern day fantasy series by Rebecca Rock. The main character is Nico Means, a police officer, who saw a Sasquatch when he was 8 years old. He later finds out that Sasquatch is not the only mythological creature that exists. There are many types of Weres living all around them. Some of them are peaceful but others give in to the beast within and have to be dealt with. That is where Nico and his family comes in. His older brothers have been keeping a secret from him. They are in fact Guardians, who were created to manage the Weres. His brothers finally tell him and his sister the truth when they realize they need more help to bring the head Sasquatch down. Things get more complicated for Nico when his best friend, the rest of his SWAT team, and his girlfriend get involved. Now Nico feels responsible for all of them and has no idea how he is going to get them all out of this alive.
I give this book a rating of 2 out of 4 stars for several reasons. Immediately starting this book, I could tell it needed some refining. The book really drags in the beginning as it is introducing the characters and building up a love story. I couldn't connect with the main character at all which makes it a bit boring but I was thankful when points of view switched to someone else.
However, my biggest problem with the book is that the first half of it is spent explaining everything over and over again. If it is explained how things work from one character's point of view I really don't need to have it explained 2 or 3 more times in another point of view. It was exhausting to hear the same things repeated so often. Also, it would have livened things up a bit if the explaining had been done through showing rather than telling. As it was, there was a whole lot of question and answer dialogue going on between the characters.
With all that being said, I have to say, the second half improved greatly. There is more action, less predictability, and less explaining. I found myself more interested in finding out what was going to happen next and was even surprised with a few twists. The characters also started to engage my interest as the book progressed. I still didn't much care for the main character but some of the side characters were enjoyable.
The ending is another good point for the book. It had a decent conclusion for the book as a whole while still teasing you with more to come in the next book.
Clearly, this author's strength is with action scenes and plot building. However, there were other areas that needed improvement and polishing which is why I can only give it 2 stars. I did come across several typos and a sentence that didn't belong but it was not enough to be troublesome. I also want to give fair warning that there is some cussing, sexual innuendos, and mentions of sexual violence (though nothing is explicit).
