Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is the first of a fantasy series of 9 books. The book follows Galen Bray as he goes from being a refugee in a war-torn land to the wealth of Voulhire after an inheritance from his great-uncle. A miraculous rags-to-riches moment. Now Galen can leave behind the strife of war and suffering and focus on fitting in and adjusting to his new surroundings, or so he had hoped.
As this is the first book, the author spends much of the time detailing the current state of affairs in the land. The reader learns of the inner workings of the kingdom, and the king who seeks to provide safety and prosperity to his people. Details of the Mianoran knights who are meant to guard the kingdom, and corrupt pedantic philanderer first knight who leads them. The threat of the rebels of Riva Rohavi who despise Voulhire, jealous due to their uninhabitable realm, looms over the kingdom. If those troubles were not enough, the most powerful mage in human history lies imprisoned a few short miles from Voulhire’s shores, waiting for his opportunity to strike.
The atmosphere in the plot is wonderfully built and progresses with each chapter. The peace and the dreamlike state of Voulhire give way as the author meticulously builds the tension and threat to its boiling point. I enjoyed the pacing of the book, as it kept me engaged and excited to realize what would happen next. The characters and their motivations are easy to grasp and one can’t help but have an emotional response to each one, whether empathy or hate.
While it is a fantasy book, it is not one rooted in extraordinary and unrealistic elements, even with the inclusion of a mage. The circumstances and events that the protagonists face are issues that would be common nature to the environment, variations of things we experience in society. The book raises thought-provoking philosophical questions and engages the reader to make observations.
There was nothing that I disliked about the book as it was a joy to read and the language was more modern and straightforward in comparison to most castle-themed books that use a much older version.
I give We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz a rating of 4 out of 4 stars because it is well-written, enjoyable to read, and professionally edited.
I would recommend this book to all fantasy lovers and anyone seeking an entertaining book. Lovers of Game of Thrones and Lord of Rings have a new favorite to add to their library in We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies.
