Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies begins with the introduction of a character named Galen Bray, who sets out on a journey to Voulhire to take over his uncle's business. When he enters Voulhire, he begins talking about the beauty of the place as well as the efficiency of its ruler. King Wilhelm of Voulhire is known for his sincerity and kindness. Voulhire, like every other kingdom, has a tyrant, Riva Rohavi, whose army is constantly plotting the kingdom's downfall and works with the prime member of the Voulhire political party, Midius, who secretly despises King Wilhelm and Voulhire and only wants wealth and title. Midius dislikes King Wilhelm because he chose Judge Eldus as Lord of Hillport instead of Midius. Read the book to experience the beauty of Voulhire firsthand and to learn that all that glitters is not gold, which means that while Voulhire may appear to be a perfect kingdom from the outside, only those who live there are aware that there is much more going on than what meets the eye.
The visual description provided for Voulhire is excellent. It is described from Galen's perspective, and he compares Voulhire to the land he travelled from, and he frequently mentions that Voulhire is at the peak of its golden age. Though Galen explains the majority of Voulhire's characteristics, the other main characters also discuss Voulhire's history and the tales of the ruling family and their ancestors. The story is told from multiple points of view, giving the impression that there is more than one protagonist.
I rate this book 4 out of 4 stars. I like how the book began as a typical story about ancient kingdoms and then surprised us all by incorporating the element of magic into the plot. The magical world here is known as 'caromentis,' and it comes with an explanation as to why it is so. By involving another realm, they changed the genre of the book from historical fiction to something we can call "fantasy historical fiction," which made the plot much more interesting. This also kept me guessing about how the book would end, but you can never guess the content of the final chapter because it was so unexpected and left me hoping for a sequel.
There was nothing I disliked about the book. Even though the book talks about a scenario that occurred many centuries ago, the text is relevant to today's world and the situations we face on a daily basis. The politics of a ruling party, the obsession with fame, betrayal by our inner circle, the fall of governments, and wars are some of the few constants over time. The story is told from different points of view associated with various timelines, but the content was not at all confusing and was presented and delivered precisely.
I recommend this book to everyone who enjoys fantasy and historical fiction. I would suggest this book to adults because it contains instances of abuse, violence, and foul language, making it inappropriate for children. The book was exceptionally well written and edited. Matthew Tysz made certain to deliver a book that kept the readers on the edge of their seats almost every minute, anticipating the next move of the characters, and I am very happy with how the book turned out in the end.
