Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A new arrival under great skies is a captivating historical fiction book that immediately sucks the reader in. It starts with a prologue, giving one a brief history that becomes an integral part later in the story and introduces one to an interesting character, Meldorath, the powerful Mage. The book is written in third person and switches to first person at the appearance of the main character, Galen. Galen grew up in a war-torn land and finds himself being the sole heir of a family member whom lived in Voulhire. He inherits property and wealth from his great uncle whom he had no idea existed; however, he was desperate to leave the chaos and start afresh. So he sets off on his journey to a place in Voulhire called Magnum Caelum, boarding a ship filled with refugees. He becomes fascinated by the beauty and innocent nature of Voulhire; however, just like him, a seemingly innocent man with a hidden darkness beneath, unbeknown to him, Voulhire is also filled with darkness imbedded deep within.
Matthew Tysz did an excellent job at keeping the reader engaged in every chapter and for articulating the story in a perfect flow. I like how Tysz is very attentive to detail regarding his descriptions of the places and characters. The entire book awakens the imagination and makes one feel present in each part of the story. I like that an important mystery in this book has been solved so one feels some sort of closure while at the same time, there are still many unsolved mysteries that makes the reader look forward to reading the following book of this series. I appreciate that Tysz included some helpful information, starting with a map at the beginning, making it easier for one to familiarize oneself with the places mentioned in the book as well as a reference guide at the end of the book that includes phrases and words which one may be unfamiliar with.
The book is basically an introduction of a series and can be a bit overwhelming at the beginning while still learning all the characters and familiarizing oneself with the different places mentioned in the book; however, it all string together perfectly in the end. I've misunderstood the second heading, being under the impression that it was conveyed in first person due to it being written as "I am Wilhelm, King of Voulhire"; however, as I've continued, I became more familiar with the style of Tysz's writing.
There were a few mistakes that I've picked up here and there; however, this book still seems professionally edited and was written exceptionally well.
We are Voulhire: A new arrival under great skies was written in a manner that makes the reader eager to complete the entire series. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and feel that the few mistakes didn't reduce it's quality at all. I, therefore, rate this book 4 out of 4 stars.
There are some gruesome descriptions of fighting and killing that might not be suitable for sensitive readers; however, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and fantasy novels involving magic and science.
