Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies was the brainchild of Matthew Tysz. It is the first installment in a series called "We Are Voulhire." There was an empire in this world whose ruler divided his territory among his four sons. That was the source of a constant power struggle between these siblings, and its citizens were the victims. Voulhire was a second kingdom that provided refuge to those fleeing the four kingdoms. This protection was short-lived as it was abused. King Wilhelm, ruler of Voulhire, wished for the prosperity of his kingdom. He used every means available to him to ensure that his citizens always received the best he had to offer. With their technological advancement and study of magic, their kingdom began to thrive. Even though Voulhire was a prosperous nation, there were many who did not care about its success. One of these was the Riva Rohavi, a nomadic army whose sole goal was to destroy Voulhire, and another was Dalehei Meldorath, a mage and former general of Voulhire, who desired dominion over the spirit world at any cost. Will they band together to overcome these challenges, or will they crumble under the weight of these forces?
This book held my interest throughout. The way the world was constructed particularly piqued my interest. Although it wasn't very large, there was a way that various regions of the world were connected in the overall plot. Tysz knew how to segue between scenes without confusing the reader. I particularly applaud him for that. Second, the author did a great job of including descriptive sequences. Everything appeared to be so clear, as if it were a recent, elaborate dream that was still fresh in my mind. It's also remarkable how the author took care to ensure that readers were gradually introduced to each major character, location, or tradition by breaking the book into sections dedicated to such things of interest. Finally, the characterization was outstanding. Every character is distinct from the next, with unique traits, and they are all so promising that I can't wait to see how they turn out in the subsequent novels.
This was an exceptionally well-written and unpredictable book. The narration, dialogue, and plot flow were all excellent. They just seemed to belong. But I don't understand why, despite all of that technological progress, there were no guns. Maybe that was on purpose, but it was still odd. Apart from that, there was nothing I didn't like about the book. Even the couple of errors that were present did not detract from my overall enjoyment.
I thoroughly enjoyed this story from beginning to end. The few things I didn't like didn't stop me from enjoying the book, and they don't warrant denying it an excellent rating either. As a result, I give it four out of four stars.
This book will captivate readers who enjoy both magic and science fiction. There is a lot of foul language and violence in this book. Younger audiences, especially those who are under the age of sixteen, should eschew it.
