Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Mathew Tysz is a fantasy novel. It opens with a great mage, Meldorath attacking a Lord claiming he was abusive of children and executing him for that. In three months, the full force of the kingdom arrives and takes Meldorath into custody. From there the book is presented to us in a way that lets us see the wondrous kingdom of Voulhire from different lenses from those of Galen a refugee saved only by his late uncle's magnanimity to those of Eldus a judge appointed a lord over the backward province of Hillport to develop it and heal the broken people there. We see through the view of the king, his rival chancellor Maido and countless others in a truly exhilarating tale.
There is so much to love about the book, it employs a unique style of writing for one, we are told the story from so many viewpoints, and we see things from the lenses of so many that we could consider them all important characters. It's a unique way of storytelling and the way it was used made the plot flow seamlessly. Talking about the plot, the character development is just incredible. A clear example is Meldorath, at the beginning he seems a crusader for justice, then we see him as a monster who has to be put down, towards the end, he appears to be a visionary who is trying to avert a bigger threat, this his character develops so well we see aspects of the heroic, anti-heroic and villainous yet we still can't figure him out totally. Another example is Galen, starting as a refugee barely escaping death by the end he is an aspiring blacksmith with the potential to become one of the greatest forces in Voulhire due to his talent. Again the way the plot blends the different aspects of the story and welds them together seamlessly is wonderful. Another thing to love is the fact that it is beautifully edited. I perused the book, seeking errors but found none. It is a testament to the effort the writer and editor put in.
There is almost nothing to dislike about the book, it is well-edited, the plot is masterful and the character development is beautiful to behold, however, some characters are not fully fleshed out and remain that way till the end. A perfect example is the Duke's family. present from the beginning of the book to the end, we know very little of them especially his wife and daughter, the book should have shed more light on these characters
I rate the book 4 out of 5 stars, it is rare to see so brilliant a story melded with such masterful editing. I am usually very strict with ratings but this book is deserving of this rating the only reason it doesn't get full marks is that the character development of a few characters could have been explored more.
I recommend the book to anyone who loves reading novels, or any lover of thrillers, fantasy, and adventure stories. It isn't often you see a story that blends them all but we have one here. Whoever enjoys any of the above will enjoy this book.
