Review: We are Voulhire
A New Arrival under Great Skies
By: Matthew Tysz

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a serial fantasy adventure novel created in a fantasy world called Voulhire. This installment in the series, A New Arrival under Great Skies, has heightened the bar within this genre. The story is set against the backdrop of a magical kingdom where swords and sorcery are the norms, a world that has achieved a golden age of peace and prosperity. Galen, an orphaned teenager, goes to Voulhire to receive an inheritance from his uncle. He arrives during troubled times for the magical kingdom, where a powerful ex-magistrate of magic, is about to disrupt years of peace and prosperity.

The first thing I admired about the book was the excellent flow of action that keeps the reader prisoner in Voulhire. Starting with a magical display pit against the guards of a corrupt governor, the book blends its drama, history, and action in a well-balanced symphonic flow. The next thing that held me captive was the unique storytelling format used by Matthew Tysz.

The story has two narrative formats, an invisible standard narrator who shares the story through the eyes of most of the characters, except for the main character, Galen. The invisible narrator presents the story under chapter titles (I am Wilhelm, King of Voulhire) which helps the reader to stay focused and not get confused with the shifts to chapters related to Galen.

Galen is a first-person narrator who shares his story from his viewpoint, but only on his role in the story. And that is what brings me to the third great takeaway from this book. I must warn readers here, you may not be able to stop reading this book. It can keep you in suspense and intrigue, more than most books that you will read.

Readers will love the simple, clean yet detailed sword and magical conflicts that Matthew Tysz has interlaced in this book, and like me, they will enjoy the colorful scenery of the Voulhire world and how it becomes a desired destination, making one longing to be there.

Even though I would have preferred to find the main character earlier in the first pages of this book, it has become clear that the details that delayed his revelation, were necessary to understand the book.

I have no reservations in recommending this book as a must-read and must-keep for our bookshelves. I rate this book 4 out of 4 and will be sending it as a gift to my friends and family.
