Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an incredible sci-fi and fantasy novel that is the first in the series “We are Voulhire”.
The protagonist of the novel, Galen Bray, evacuates his home in the Lands of the Princess which is struck by war. Galen travels by sea as he heads to a small town in Voulhire called Magnum Caelum. His new homeland has new possibilities for him as he works in a steel forge from his deceased uncle. Here he meets Rowan, who shows him Voulhire; an advanced and industrious place. However, a war is brewing in his new home and not just any war; a war of magic. Will Voulhire prosper?
The book has a historical setting of the 8th century. Matthew Tysz provides a reference guide and maps to give the reader a more realistic approach while reading hence one is not easily confused or lost. The concepts of science and spirituality intertwine throughout the plot and form an interesting story that might change the perspective of the reader on the two matters. Reading this book requires one to be open-minded and a fan of action novels with fiction.
I loved everything about Matthew Tysz’s first book from the gradual plot to the shocking end. I will definitely read the second book of the series. The author uses subtle humor in some parts of the book which made it more fun to read. I picked up a few new words to add to my ever-growing vocabulary and I encountered no errors while reading the book. The book marks the beginning of a very promising series and I hope the second book will have a faster pace.
Grotesque killings are described in the book but they did not put me off. Moreover, there is the use of profanity but not extremely. Hints of sexual acts are present in the book. I disliked the glossary being at the end of the book hence making me skim through pages to find the meaning of certain words.
I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars because I simply loved it and I am looking forward to reading the next one because of the thrilling end of this book. The book has so many mysteries that unfold as one reads with each being as thrilling as the last.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves historical books as well as science fiction novels. Anyone interested in books of magic will also adore reading it. I would recommend it to mature readers due to the killings which would disturb younger readers.
