Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies is a sci-fi/fantasy written by Matthew Tysz. It follows life in the fictional world of Voulhire, a nation revered for its prosperity. In this book, the author weaves together a tale full of action and intrigue to produce a book readers are sure to take pleasure in. This book has bestseller written all over it.
The novel opens with Galen Bray, a native of the Land of Princes, making his escape while being pursued by soldiers. He was able to make his escape on a ship that would take him to Voulhire. In Voulhire, Galen would inherit his dead granduncle's forge and be reunited with Rowan, the man who ensured his safe passage into Voulhire. Who better to assist Galen, who is still trying to find his place in this strange new world, than someone already familiar with how things work? Together, these two friends would set out on a quest to restore life to his uncle's blacksmith business.
First thing First, Matthew Tysz did a wonderful job with this novel. I am full of praise for it. The level of depth and realism displayed by each character was beyond amazing. This book introduces a large cast of intriguing characters, each of whom plays a central role in how the story develops. Through the use of imagery, the author was able to successfully convey a sense of the realness of the characters to the readers. I found Galen Bray's character both intriguing and a little disconcerting with how innocent and humble he comes across. Coupled with the fact that he hails from a cutthroat nation known for its violence, his innocence makes him appear naive at times. He is one of the more central characters, and one of the things I anticipate most about the sequel is the role he will play.
I also enjoyed Matthew Tysz's writing style. It contains a good mix of both old-world and new-world phrases and dialogues, which initially looked out of place but ended up adding to the appeal of the entire book. It gives off a feeling of being both classical and modern. Though set in a period where the use of horses and carriages was still popular as a means of transport, the use of a modern-related word like "gym" threw me off at first.
In conclusion, I am rating this book four out of four stars and also a five out of five stars. The effort that went into developing this book was simply amazing. I didn't come across any errors while reading it, so I have no basis on which to deduct a star; it was well-edited.
I would recommend this book to readers of the fantasy genre who enjoy novels with a rich blend of magic and adventure.
