Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
There is an intruder in Hillport Castle, and Meldorath has come to remove Lord Orlin from his home on allegations of paedophilia. With great magical power, Meldorath successfully whittles down the guards guarding the castle (effectively breaking through their defences) and commits Orlin to justice. Meldorath is then appointed as Lord of Hillport. This, however, does not last, and the King orders his arrest. In the next scene, we find out that Meldorath is rumoured to be dead. What transpired during his arrest? Grab your copy of We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz to find out.
What I loved about the book was, first, that it had magical elements. True to its labelled genre of fantasy, the book incorporated magical powers and powerful mages, not forgetting the allure of Caromentis. Second, I loved the vivid description of the different parts of Voulhire (Soulhire, Magnum Caelum, Chalethire, Virko, Hillport, Yamon Soul, and Alconia) and their people. Third, the book incorporated comedy through Rowan and Galen's interaction, which provided relief from the tense mood featured in other parts.
Fourth, I love a good mystery, and We Are Voulhire: A New Arrival Under Great Skies delivered that. Last, aside from all the above, I have gotten some new quotes for my collection, which I consider a bonus. One such quote is, “Mankind’s greatest feature is the ability to imagine the unknowable and to conceptualize the unimaginable.”
What I did not like about the book was, first, the information overload. I felt like too much was going on in the book, which made it a bit tedious to read. Second, I would have appreciated some more magic. The magical elements, though featured, felt limited to me.It should be noted, however, that this did not greatly affect my enjoyment of the book.
The book seems to have been professionally edited. I found no errors whatsoever. That considered and bearing in mind the positive and negative aspects, I find no reason to give it a lesser rating than four out of five stars. The book could have easily garnered five stars, but the information overload made it a bit tedious to read.
I would recommend this book to lovers of fantasy and mystery. The novel would, however, not be suitable for minors due to the violence, profanities, and mild sexual content. Religious aspects are featured, but I highly doubt they would be offensive to any reader. A trigger warning is also issued to readers sensitive to themes such as paedophilia, though it should be noted that there are no graphic on-page descriptions.
