Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
Matthew Tysz's We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a fantasy book featuring politics and supernatural powers in the kingdom of Voulhire. The book centers its story on a character named Galen Bray, who narrates his experiences from a first-person perspective; in other instances, the author uses a third-person perspective.
Galen is an immigrant to Voulhire from the Land of the Princes. Unlike Voulhire, his homeland is chaotic and unfit for a stable life. Galen moved to Voulhire after his uncle's death. His uncle was a wealthy smith, and having Galen as his only family, he had left all his wealth for him. In another scene, Eldus, the current lord of Hillport, a city in Voulhire, is working hard to neutralize panic in his city and other traumatic deeds his predecessor, Meldorath, had left. Strangely, everyone that Galen interviews seems to have no memory of the past. Although Meldorath was killed, rumors in Voulhire speculate that he's still alive and maybe planning a horrible comeback. It is believed that there are strange beings in Voulhire from the Caromentis universe, and they might take over Voulhire. Will Galen survive in his new homeland?
I appreciate how the author introduces his readers to a list of characters and their roles. For that reason, it was easy to understand the book's contents. Secondly, I liked the magnitude that the prologue carried. The author used the prologue to create a likable chaotic scene and suspense that will ignite readers' thirst to know more, thus making the book more appealing. Additionally, I applaud how every chapter has a subheading to introduce and prepare the readers' minds for what follows. Also, the blend of narration and speech added life to the story.
Furthermore, the book's plot is set in two worlds: real and imaginary magical worlds. These two worlds' events and characters are intertwined uniquely, making readers flow with the author's imagination. I also liked the action scenes in this book and how detailed they were for effective visualization. Lastly, I applaud the author for breaking down troublesome phrases he used in the book so that readers fully absorb the book's contents.
This book was exceptionally well edited. I did not dislike anything in it. Therefore, I will rate We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to lovers of political and mystery tales.
