The Lord Orlin of the town of Hillport was unexpectedly replaced without forewarning by a valiant but sinister mage, Meldorath. This seemingly warranted move by now, Lord Meldorath, causes panic and chaos for the whole of Voulhire. The king Wilhelm is to subside this panic-stricken state for the whole of the nation, especially at Hillport. Wilhelm finds Meldorath’s replacement and the fate of the nation would seem to be put at ease, but Meldorath’s existence is still in question.

From a civil war among four princes, Galen Bray journeys to Voulhire to establish inheritance from his uncle’s will. Galen, in the most helpless of situations, is chased off the island and boards a ship at the docks nearest the shoreline. Upon arrival from sea, he is to acquire property and his uncle’s steel forge. A grand adventure he must endure!

We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies by Matthew Tysz is an epic novel because it introduces a world of magic, adventure, politics, underlying moral tones or philosophies, and a reflection of the human condition. If one is familiar with fantasy or science fiction, I do believe they would enjoy it. There is a sufficient map, and character reference at the beginning of the book. The map that is displayed is easy to read, and the character list is established enough to refresh the memory.

I really enjoyed the author’s ability to portray action sequences. He doesn’t seem to give much build-up before battle or fight scenes, which induces a lot of excitement and visual aid. In addition, an apparent casual conversation is made thrilling in the same way by Tysz on more than one occasion. I never seemed to struggle to place myself in the action, as if I was there experiencing what he wrote. There are some really, detailed, gruesome depictions which were really quite stunning. The intermittent, masculine jokes that are trickled through the book helped me to have a good laugh as well.

I felt that the character’s personalities came out from their depiction in the book but that there was an absence of detail in their appearance. This isn’t uncommon for fantasy or science fiction but a quick mention of clothing or hair color more frequently would have helped visually to build off of. I am giving this book 5 out of 5 stars. The book was edited well and I could find no grammatical errors. I’m recommending this book because it seems easily read, well edited, and the magic is curious.
