Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfil is a science-fiction novel that is set in a world where every element of the average citizen's life is monitored and managed by companies with the use of artificial intelligence and the Hierachy. Depending on the crime, varying degrees of harsh punishments are given out to discourage disobedience and quell any unrest among the citizens.
The protagonist, Kim, suffers through a monotone and repetitive life. Her job has lost the joy and excitement it had at the beginning. She had at first approached her assignments with vigour and excitement and was ready to advance in the organisation and carry out more important duties. However, things quickly became mundane and uninteresting, and she gradually realised how serious her tasks were. When what was meant to be an innocent bicycle ride on a different trail turns into a terrifying experience, Kim is sent down a rabbit hole of questions.
Craig W. Stanfill has presented a masterful work that provides an enlightened insight into today’s reality. Although many readers will feel that this is a reflection of our future, elements of this book are present in today’s world. However, they are not as dictatorial, advanced, or eccentric. If the technology, the laws, and the extreme level of control found in this book were replaced with societal norms, poverty, wealth, and the need to fit in, the book would not seem so different from today’s world. We have already been conditioned to be comfortable with the way the world currently is.
The stark contrast between the living conditions of labour camps and the wealthy districts was superbly described and added to the overall setting of the world. The vivid description of the personalities of each character and the worker robots allows for easy visualisation and a realistic reading experience. The subtle, yet perfect, use of humour and sarcasm added to the overall quality of the book. I also loved the gender neutral nature of the book.
There was nothing I hated about this book. Amazingly, I could not find any errors in this book. From the nameless companies that are identified by only their function to the plainly named days of the week, Craig created a perfectly nondescript and neutral world that never felt forced or farfetched. I believe this book deserves a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. The plot, excellent writing style, and thought-provoking theme all contributed to this book’s rating.
As it is extremely well edited and utterly captivating, science-fiction readers will love this book. With its light use of profanity and sexual content and its extreme use of drugs and alcohol, this book is more suited for mature readers.
