Review of We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies
We are Voulhire: A New Arrival under Great Skies is a fantastic work of fiction by Matthew Tysz with elements of magic, mystery, science, adventure, and politics. The introduction and foundation of the characters, locations, and stories of the kingdom named Voulhire were the primary focus of this first instalment of the series. The author deserves full credit because this unique novel will undoubtedly leave readers with many unanswered questions and mysteries, which will spark an interest in reading the next in the series.
Galen Bray, the protagonist, hails from the depressed Lands of Princes. Due to his dead uncle's inheritance, he was able to leave the miserable life in Princes and move to the modern, expanded, and tranquil kingdom of Voulhire, where he hopes to change his fortunes. Within Voulhire, there are a variety of towns and cities, including Yamon Soul, the spiritual city; Virko, the industrial hub town; and Soulhire, the capital. Hillport is one of them. Another important and enigmatic personality enters the scene: Lord Meldorath. Meldorath is thought to be dead, but his memory and the suffering he once inflicted on the citizens of the hillport are still very much alive.
The book has many characters, who are introduced interestingly to one another, and the plot shifts from time to time depending on the setting and the characters. The reactions, dread, and impact of wizards and their environment are clearly described. Galen's honesty, modesty, and desire to learn impressed me. Discovering how Galen's future and magic mysteries interconnect would be enticing. I appreciate that maps are provided at the beginning and that Voulhirian concepts are defined at the conclusion for easier comprehension. Additionally, the author did an amazing job conjuring up a fictional world that is exciting and creative.
The novel had a lot of good points; however, occasionally I was confused between the characters, names, and intentions. I also feel that the personalities of Lord Orlin and Wilhelm's son were underdeveloped, but at the same time, several other interesting aspects occurred, which I believe shouldn't be divulged because doing so would ruin the enthusiasm and suspense.
I think the aforementioned flaws might be communicated in the upcoming series, which I would love to read, so I'm giving this professionally edited book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. This fascinating book would appeal to audiences who enjoy science fiction and magic, but I wouldn't suggest it to younger readers due to the sexual and profane language.
