The Devil Pulls the Strings by J. W. Zarek is an action-packed, supernatural book. Boone Daniels is a small-town musician/handyman/Ren Faire knight, who after an accident during a joust in a renaissance fair, made a promise to his best friend to take his place as a lead singer in his band. Boone was asked to meet with Professor Stone, the band's liaison in New York City. What seems like a routine trip immediately turns into a dangerous venture. Boone was greeted with a dead body on the pavement and a group of men shooting at him. Alongside his newfound ally, Sapphire Anjou, Boone found himself in a battle against the immortal Sinti, who is trying to stop the resurrection of Baba Yaga by summoning the Devil. Of course, they are not without help. The Lavender and Roses Society is backing them up with everything they've got. But is it enough to help Boone save New York or the world? Because Boone has a secret of his own. He has been stalked by the wendigo ever since he was young. Oh, and there is also a secret society of vampires and werewolves. Boone is in for a 'Hell’ of a ride.

What I liked the most about this book were the action scenes. This book is filled with non-stop actions from start to finish. I liked the way the author describes the action scenes in the book. The author explained everything very well, making me able to vividly imagine the action scene that is unfolding. But the descriptions could get too graphic, so this book is more suitable for mature readers. The story is also incredible. I liked the blend of the supernatural, mythological, and modern life in one setting. The author is able to combine all of these things without making them feel out of place. I can’t wait to read the sequel to this book because of the cliffhangers at the end. Also, the twist at the end of this book really caught me by surprise.

The characters are also the highlight of this book. The book mainly focused on Boone, the main character. It focused on how he grew from a panic-stricken musician, who is afraid of leaving his hometown, into a brave warrior bard, who fought off supernatural and mythological beings in one night. Unfortunately, the other characters didn’t get many spotlights. For example, I feel there are more stories about Sapphire’s past that haven’t been told yet. Maybe the sequel will cover that part of the story. Even so, I found nothing to dislike about the book.

I only found one error in the entire book, so I can say that this book is professionally edited. That is why I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. The story is fresh and fun, with actions that made me unable to stop reading. The characters are also unique and interesting, making this a fun reading experience for me.

I recommend this book to readers who enjoy the action genre. Also, lovers of mythological and supernatural beings will no doubt enjoy this book. As I mentioned above, there are graphic scenes in this book. That is why this book is more suitable for mature young adults.

One of the most striking aspects of the book is its world-building. The descriptions of the various locations in the book are vivid and immersive, making it easy to picture the settings in your mind. The book also explores complex themes such as power, morality, and loyalty, which add depth and complexity to the story.
