Review of Terms of Service
Terms of Service by Craig W. Stanfill is an eye-catching science fiction novel primarily about technological evolution. The setting is in the future, where humans rely on AIs for all services. The book's narration is in the third person, with Kim being the main character.
Kim is a youthful girl living in a high-tech state where robots do everything. Services like communication, medication, and security are AI-controlled, and humans only present their requests to their bots. Following instructions is the most strict thing in the Artificial Intelligence Surveillance State, and those who violate rules get notifications explaining their punishment. However, Kim and Shan become more curious about what lies beyond their city. They break the rules by going to the prohibited zone, but strangely, they don't get any rule violation messages. After a puzzling and long adventure in the prohibited zone, Kim and her friend realize the AI company is hiding a big secret from them.
I liked reading about the super advancement of technology in the book. It was fascinating how the human conscience could be altered through technology to create many robotic humans with the same features as the primary human. Although robots can make human life easier, they also have their adverse effects, and I applaud the author for highlighting that in his book. Furthermore, I appreciate the author's amazing creativity displayed in the book. He included mysteries, twists, and suspense in the story, which made the book more appealing. Another likeable aspect of the book is character development. Stanfill did an excellent job of gradually signing his characters and building their effects. For instance, at the beginning of the book, Kim is just a normal lady, but as the story proceeds, more of her personality is revealed, and her effect on the story keeps growing.
Moreover, I enjoyed this book's simplified vocabulary. It was also so well-detailed that I could visualize scenes as they were narrated. There were emotional scenes that felt real. For example, I felt sorry for Kim and other citizens after realizing the AI company had misused them. Additionally, this book might predict the natural world of the future. With the current rise in technology in a society dominated by greed for wealth and power, this book's story may become a reality.
The book was exceptionally well-edited, and I didn't dislike anything about it. Therefore, I rate Terms of Service 5 out of 5 stars. I recommend this book to people interested in science fiction books.
